Hi everyone, my female egernia depressa gave birth to 2 wax eggs, I observed the same thing last year and this was the first birth. Is the birth of wax eggs a common occurrence for this species? or is it because my male is still immature. They are 3 years old.
From what I’ve read they should be mature after 2 years.
If you’re seeing wax eggs that means they weren’t fertilized. So there’s a few different things that could be the reason
- you might not have a 1.1 pair
- the male is infertile
- the female is refusing to let the male mate
I haven’t personally worked with these guys, but from what I understand they can be difficult to sex if they aren’t already actively breeding. So if you had received them as a young pair, it’s possible you ended up with 2 females.
It is still is possible that you can have an infertile male or the female is rejecting him for some reason … But from what I typically see in cases like this, it’s an opps and you end up with 2 of the same sex animals.
I saw male hemipenis and mating last year. I didn’t put a camera this year so I can’t say anything about mating. Anyway, thanks for the reply, I’ll try again next year.
