We bought a 6 month old CG 2 weeks ago and are having trouble getting her to eat. She will do crickets and other live insects but she will not try the CGD stuff at all. We have bought 3 different flavors and brands and she runs when we try to bring them to her, nor will she go to them on her own. How can we get her to eat what she’s supposed to be eating? She also seems to have gotten even more difficult about handling ever since we moved her into her 40 gallon terrarium when we upgraded her a few days ago. We’ve never been loud or grabbed her from overhead. I don’t know why she’s scared of us handling her so much when she seemed really ok with it at the convention.
I’m not a CG person, but I think I’ve got some sage advice. Maybe she just needs more time to acclimate to her new enclosure. Maybe do a week or two of “hands off” until she settles in. Feed her whatever she’ll eat in those 1-2 weeks. Then try to get her to eat what you really want. Once you got her eating what you want for an extended period of time, then start handling sessions.
You gotta remember, new surroundings can be very stressful to all pets and people. Until they acclimate, they won’t be themselves. And handling pets can be stressful too. Reduce that stress until they can adjust.
How’s that sound, CG people?
Agreed, she needs more time to acclimate. The typical advise is to leave them and the tank completely alone, except for when changing their water and CGD, and misting, and to not feed them any insects until they’re eating their CGD consistently.
So for now, I would do just that, and just feed her some CGD every few days, until you notice that she’s eaten - it might take a week, or a month, but she’ll eat eventually, and once she does you can start handling her.
She won’t starve? If I don’t feed her insects and she ignores the CGD, how long can she go without food?
Nope, they can go for a month if not even longer without food without even really losing much weight tbh… Not that i’d recommend it mind you, but yeah she’ll be fine, as long as you leave her alone, she’ll eat eventually.
Good to know, thank you!
No problem! Just to be safe, if she still hasn’t eaten in about 4 weeks time, it would be a good idea to feed her either some bugs or hand-feed her some CGD, but if you just leave her alone, i bet she’ll eat way before then
