Enclosure security is priority one. They are escape artists.

Cute little Amel. Since you asked for tips, here are a few. @deanaii is right, security is job one. Baby colubrids can practically teleport. Okay, not really, but they can fit into and through incredibly tiny spaces. Be sure your enclosure is completely secure. Secondly, security is important in another way; your baby snake needs to feel secure in her home to thrive. Baby snakes are prey for many things in nature and they instinctively know this. They need plenty of cover and places to hide. When they feel safe they are much more amenable to feeding. That’s the third crucial thing. Once you’ve got her home, give her at least 3-5 days undisturbed to settle into her enclosure before you offer a meal. Feed her the same thing in the same manner she was eating before you got her. Once she takes a couple of meals for you, you can alter the routine if you wish.
Let me say again the hardest part. Undisturbed. I know, it’s hard. She’s cute and you want to interact with her. You should have years ahead to do that. Give her the gift and the respect of time to feel safe in your care.

Great tips above. Agreed with all of them. Only tip to add: once she’s settled in, after any feeding, make sure you give her 48 hours to digest before holding her. Handling too soon can cause a regurge, which is very hard on their little systems.

Agree with everything said above. One more thing that people forget or don’t put a high priority on the list of things to do before you receive your new snake is to locate a reptile vet in your area in case heaven forbid you might need one for your newbie down the road…
