As I said I’m new to the breeding aspect. I recent got a baby male and an adult female that are het desert ghost. I have a plan for what I want for an end project but how do I get there? I’m wanting to produce a GHI Mojave Desert Ghost. Any pointers/tips welcomed to get me going in the right direction. I also have another project I’d like to start that my wife wants but just hasn’t been produced at least I haven’t seen any or if it’s possible she’s wanting a Chocolate Banana Pied. Thanks.
Before you get into the breeding aspect at all, and I’m not trying to be rude here, do you have any future preparation for this breeding project you want to get into?
Do you have a dedicated reptile specialized veterinarian for emergencies that are not an if but a when they will happen?
Do you have a backup plan for offspring that may never sell, space for those offspring to grow into adulthood and possibly kept their whole decades long lifespan?
Do you have the financial, emotional and energetic fortitude to keep up with caring for these animals, which can be unexpectedly and extremely draining?
Do you have an idea of how you want to go about getting the food these animals will need?
Do you have at least a few years experience keeping these animals and have a comfortable and confident care routine for them that allows them to thrive?
These are the things you need to consider before you ever even think about breeding Ball Pythons, especially the aspect of finding them new homes if thats the route you want to go…
A really good way to get an idea of this is to go on MorphMarket, look at how many BPs are currently up for sale and look at ad listings to see how long they’ve been up for sale.
Its not a great market and has never really seen much improvement in terms of oversaturation.
So if you do want to get into breeding them, make sure you are in a good position to do so and understand what your end goal with this project is.
To make GHI Mojave desert ghost in addition to both parents being at a minimum het desert ghost you need at least one parent to be Mojave and at least one parent to be GHI. And with those minimums you also need some luck (1:16 per egg) and as mentioned above homes for all the 15:16 likely misses that aren’t your ideal hatchling.
Because females take longer to grow up I would stick with the het desert ghost female you have. But look to upgrade to an at least het DG male that is also Mojave and GHI up to (if budget allows) a visual DG GHI Mojave male. Actually in the “money is no object” world a super GHI super Mojave homozygous DG male would be perfect. BUT if you could find and buy that you probably wouldn’t be looking to make a GHI Mojave DG.
