No Bull Serpents 2026 Pituophis Breeding Plans

Hey Everyone!

I’m a little behind on getting this post up so please forgive me. I have seen a few others do this kind of post and thought why not do one myself. This is my first season breeding pituophis (any snakes really) so I am learning along the way. I’ll post updates and lessons learned here. Hopefully this chronicle will be helpful for others or, at a minimum, be enjoyable to follow along.

I brumated all of my 2023 and older animals starting Thanksgiving weekend. I cut off food around Halloween so they had ample time to clear out their digestive tracts. I kept them out in my garage for the first two months of brumation where the temps ranged from 65F to 45F average ~54F. I did bring them in and put them in the unfinished part of my basement which was 55F degrees at the time. I would use that part of the basement for the three months, but it doesn’t get that cold until January. I brought my males up around Valentine’s Day and my females a week later. I brought the males up earlier to get them some meals in them before the females were in the room and they stopped eating to breed. They have indeed stopped eating, so I am glad I got at least two meals in them before that happened.

I began pairing them the first weekend of March. I have been pairing them for five days and separating for two to feed and rest.

Alight here we go with the actual pairings…

Black Pines

“Phil” - 2022 - Cincinnati Zoo/Boyle x Bernardo - produced by Michael Coone

X

“Ursula” - 2022 - Cincinnati Zoo x Boyle - produced by Michael Coone

This was my first pair to lock up. I’ve witnessed two locks from them so far and she looks like she is beginning to swell in the back end. This is an ESA listed species so they require an interstate commerce permit to be sold or traded across state lines. There are also states where they are illegal to own without a permit. These include the two states that encompass their native range, Mississippi and Alabama. That being said, I plan to work with buyers to complete the necessary ISC permit paperwork.

Bull Snakes

I only have two bull snake pairings going this season, but they are both pretty exciting.

“Hendrix” - Red Hypo (Stillwater/Hannum) pos het Albino and Whiteside - 2023 - produced by Russ Bates

X

“Matilda” - Red het Hypo Stillwater pos het Albino and Whiteside - 2023 - produced by Bryan Whitehead

I will start this off by saying this little guy is a machine! He is relentless. She weighs twice (maybe more) as much as he does and is almost a foot longer, but that has not stopped him. :joy:

This is my most interesting pairing as it’s a bit of a wildcard as to what it may produce. There is still no definitive answer as to what “Hannum Hypo” actually is. It’s been proven to be at least allelic with the Trumbower line of hypo and incompatible with the Hypo Stillwater line, but this guy has Hannum and Stillwater in his lineage. The female may also be het for Trumbower. I’m shooting for a mix of red hypo stillwater, red influence normals, and possibly some whiteside and albinos mixed in.

I was a little hesitant to pair these two given all the genetic uncertainty but temptation got the better of me. I have witnessed three locks from these two but I am certain there have been more with how persistent the male has been.

“Marley” - Hypo Trumbower/Ballam Axanthic “Ghost” het Albino pos het Whiteside - 2023 - produced by Summer Stephenson

X

“Sunny” - Hypo Trumbower/Albino “Hybino” het Axanthic (Ballam) pos het Whiteside - 2023 - produced by Jason Nelson

This was my last pair to get going. I’ve witnessed one lock but caught the male putting the moves on her a couple of other times. I’m shooting for a mix of hypo snow (hypo/albino/axanthic combo), ghosts, hybinos, and hopefully whiteside versions of each.

Exciting stuff! Thanks for reading and that’s all for now.

Oh hey! I see you go by on IG now and then. Beautiful, beautiful animals.

Excited to see what comes of this season for you – especially that wildcard pair! If I had space I’d love to work with bulls, but getting to see cool work in the space by other people is nearly as good

Hey @eorr53 Eric! I’m so excited for you! It’s great to see different projects such as these! I’m a fan of bulls, pines and gophers as well! I was wondering what you had been up to!

I’m sending you great vibes and wishes for the very best successes, tons of eggs and healthy babies! It sounds like you have been doing your homework and paying attention to the best of the best here! Exciting times for sure!

I am curious about what I think I see in the 4th picture? Btw the pics with the 2 heads together are adorable! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It looks like the head of the one bull is inside the head of the other?

Oh that? :joy:

Normal breeding behavior in pituophis for the male to bite the female during copulation. He is holding on. He’s not hurting her aside from some minor scale damage, which will be unnoticeable after a shed. No blood!

You can see in the first pic of the black pines, he has her neck in his mouth.

I haven’t seen the ghost male do this yet. He appears to be a gentle lover! :joy:

I didn’t catch the black pine love bite although I thought something was off! :joy:. I kinda figured that was a love making trait but I have never seen it in action before! This is so cool!!!

I wish you the best of luck Eric with all of them. I am so looking forward to seeing some red bulls.

Thanks Tom! Hoping for some nice reds and hypos from the “wild card” pair.

These girls are all looking thick. The hybino and the black pine have that pre-shed look as well.

Also, I finally finished the incubator. I bought this broken 166 bottle wine cooler over a year ago. The guy was letting it go cheap because it wouldn’t cool and he couldn’t fix it. Good thing I don’t need it too cool!

I’ve had it running for several hours and it’s heating very evenly. Only .7F difference from top to bottom.

Your mommas to be are looking all bulked up Eric! Any day now!!! :+1:

Edit to add: Your incubator looks really great too! Excellent makeover!

Thanks Caron! They are looking quite large at the moment. I took each of them out last night just to look them over and you can see a clearly defined swelling from the mid body down to the cloaca. I am certain these girls are gravid. Hopefully they are all fertile/healthy eggs. Still waiting on pre-lay sheds to begin.

I am looking forward to putting the incubator to use!

Another quick update. This is actually kind of big. My female Hypo Stillwater 66% het Miami Axanthic has been extremely active as of late. She’s been constantly cruising the cage, glass surfing, pushing at the doors, and ravenous. Minus the appetite, these are all behaviors I have seen from my males that are looking breed.

I had not initially planned to pair her up because she was a little smaller than my other females that did get paired up. I also wasn’t sure the male I had planned for her was ready. He’s only a 2024 and weighs maybe a third of what she does. He also was not brumated this winter. However, her behavior of late had me thinking maybe she is ready and is looking to breed.

Last night I decided to put the male in to see what would happen. Well, sure enough she was indeed looking to breed. She almost immediately began courting the male. It took him a few minutes to get in gear but within 30-minutes they locked up. It was quite comical watching her try to get him in the mood. Usually these roles are reversed with the male pestering the female.

Anyway, really excited for this one. I’m aiming to make some really high white/high contrast ghosts from this pairing. Hopefully she proves het for axanthic.:crossed_fingers:

1.0 Hypo Stillwater/Miami Axanthic (Ghost)

0.1 Hypo Stillwater 66% ph Miami Axanthic

This is the female sibling to the male ghost that I have also. I plan to hold back a male or two from this pairing to pair with her when she is ready.

Hey Eric! A woman knows what she wants doesn’t she?!!! Super glad for the pairing and lock. Love is definitely in the air at your house!!!.

I love that last little girl! She’s a looker!:snake::+1:

Yes she really is. I can’t wait to have some males from this pairing to pair with her. It should produce some really clean, high contrast offspring.
