Would you mind sharing what brand bin/tub/enclosure that is?
Yeah this is a little tub thing I got on Amazon that I had to alter and spiff up a bit to make suitable for animals, but for about $40 and an afternoon with the Dremel tool I think it was a steal.
It’s ABS plastic, so I was able to stick a heat pad under one end and another on the side. I siliconed the little mesh at the top into place and covered most of it to cut down on evaporation. You have to be careful of the wire of the mesh- I had to fold down some pokey bits. I removed the insert that makes a hermit crab type deck thing, then dremeled down any bits of plastic sticking out and drilled through a hole for sticking down a thermostat probe.
That sort of thing is needed to make one of these useful, but hey, it’s been a Baby Bin for both my snakes and is a good buy IMHO if you are handy with tools.
Edit to add: Amazon doesn’t seem to have it for sale anymore but there might be more of them floating around out there.
I remember scoring* Sangfroid’s enclosure before, @athleticshoelace. You’ve really done a fantastic job with that.
*Edit: “seeing.” I wish I had been able to score an enclosure like Sangfroid’s!
Thank you! Yeah when I first 'scaped it I posted it. This is the current iteration, with more cover given by breaking up lines of sight and shuffling some elements around. It should last him until this Spring or Summer when his bioactive should be ready. I’m still tweaking the heat in there.
It’s such a neat little enclosure. The shape of it looks really cool. But mostly I just like the fact that it’s green (my favourite colour). Really wish more high-quality reptile enclosures came in fun colours. Most only seem to come in black, or maybe white.
I seem to remember looking at one brand that did come with some cool colour options (I wanna say Black Box…?), but they were already pretty spendy, and the fun colours cost extra. I decided that maybe black was fine after all. ![]()
EDIT: Just looked at Black Box, and I think I was misremembering, as they only seem to come in the usual black or white. Wish I could remember which company did the colours.
Well I really don’t think the reptile will mind! ![]()
Yeah, the reptiles definitely don’t care. So long as their needs are being met, they don’t care if they’re in a $5 plastic box or a $3000 planted bioactive vivarium in their keeper’s favourite colour.
But as a human, I’d love to have a stack of kiwi green enclosures in my room. ![]()
Yes I totally understand Jennifer! I have to admit that would be awesome! ![]()

I’m actually planning to vinyl wrap the front face and sides of my Kages enclosures. Adhesive vinyl (conTact paper) is cheap these days and there’s no reason to put up with a huge black box when paint or a little wrap job will fix that.
That’s a great idea! Of course, I’m completely inept with anything sticky (I’m frequently flummoxed by tape), so if I tried to use it, it’d come out looking like
. But paint is a good idea. I could do a decent job with paint (probably).
Chester update: the girl hit 22 grams! She’s officially twice as big as when we got her!! Well done, little lady!
Some shots of her noodling around tonight. She stayed in my sleeve for twenty minutes, and then really took her time deciding to come out once I offered her re-entry into her enclosure.
She is really lovely! And filling out too! Thank you for the pictures and the update! ![]()

Chester is looking amazing, I love her!
The more I look at and read about house snakes, the more I want one. Like, I really want one. I think I’ve pretty much decided that a house snake will be my next snake.
That said, I will do my best to exercise herculean self-control and wait. I just got a boa a few weeks ago. I told myself no more snakes until I get her adult enclosure set up in my room and see what space I have left after that…and that’s at least a couple years away.
This is a wholly understandable and reasonable reaction to the excellence that is the housie. ![]()
Best of luck with your waiting! It’s a good time right now to, I think – some cool stuff happening with housies that’ll start showing up in the next couple of years. I know someone just imported a couple of (probable) black-eyed leucistic fuliginosus and are planning on growing them out and seeing if the gene breeds true in the next few years. There also seem to be more breeders producing hybinos in the capensis, which are realllly gorgeous.
Of course, you can’t go wrong with a classic little brown or black, either, and they don’t take up too much space so once you’ve got your space settled with your lovely new boa, a little housie shouldn’t be too hard to slot in!
House snakes are small though. You should get one. Like what is an extra 3-4 foot snake. No need to wait. Do it. Do it. Do it.
@kabre, I’m definitely interested to see what the house snake morphs will be like in a couple years. Even though I love the look of the wild-types of the various species, it will still be interesting to see what morph options pop up. I think you’re right that the next few years will be interesting for house snakes.
You’re such a bad influence.
At the very least, I need to give my landlord/mother some time to recover from my last snake purchase. Plus I have a new housemate moving in this month. I’d like to avoiding scaring him off too quickly.
Soooo next month? I think that seems good ![]()
Isn’t he, though??

I’m going to chime in too😂. But I’m going to remind you of what we said to each other yesterday!!! So I am not going to be a bad influence like that little stinker @logar Logan……![]()

Yeah you get a 36inch tank by about 16 or 18 inches and that’ll do ya for one male or even a smaller female… My Sangfroid has spent his baby and juvenile months in a 10 gallon on my desk so it’s not like they need very much room… enable enable enable XD
I cannot speak higher of the House snake. The only way they could be better is if there were a diurnal species. Someday I want to get a super red one from Reach Out Reptiles.
