GUYS! I was walking across my living room, holding echo, when all of the sudden she LEAPED from my hands onto the floor. Now, let me clarify. I am ALWAYS careful with my geckos, and I know which ones jump, and which ones don’t. And echo has never been one to jump. But, at this time she decided to jump…and she landed on the floor, and then rolled over UPSIDE down, and OPENED her mouth! And my first thought was “omg she’s dead” but I gently picked her up, and set her upright, and then she started walking! But the back half of her wasn’t moving!! I freaked out, and cried, thinking I had horribly injured my best girl. But after a warm soak, she started walking a bit better, and then now all of her is working just fine…
I wouldn’t like any criticism, because I feel HORRIBLE, but I would like help knowing what to do! I have already reached out to my vet friend, but she’s never one to respond to messages immediately. Pls! I need your help!
Hey, this happens, more often than you’d think. I’ve had geckos jump countless times (Even with kids watching me… whoops) and usually they ended up fine.
Not gonna lie, it scared me a lot the first few times, but they are very resilient creatures (which I learned after hearing them falling in their cages at night while I’m trying to sleep.) And it’s great to hear that even though it sounded pretty bad, that she’s doing okay:)
Well the issue in this case is that they are leos, not cresties. While crested geckos are made to be going from branch to branch which inevitably means falling, a leopard gecko isn’t.
That is very concerning. I don’t know what would cause that but the back half not working properly seems like she could of injured her spine. I would make a vet appointment asap even is she seems to be doing fine now
Yes. Cresties were created to jump, Leo’s were certainly not. I’ll have my friend look at her, I have a lot of things going on right now, and I can’t afford to get her checked out professionally…but my friend is an exotic vet, and she’s checked out tons of my Leo’s over the years. In the meantime, I’ve been giving echo warm soaks, and I have her right near me so I can keep an eye on her. Should I do anything else?
No no you’re good😆 maybe my Leo’s just wanna be like the cresties😁 I have one that jumps SO much. I always HAVE to hold him near the ground cuz he’s a crazy jumper
I’m so sorry about Echo thinking she had wings for a split second. Don’t beat yourself up over it. I know it’s easier said than done, but we know you care a lot about her! It’s important to share because there is always going to be someone too embarrassed or upset to share their experiences with accidents involving our animals, and I applaud you for posting. You’re doing the right thing by asking your friend to check her out. Please keep us posted, she sounds like a tough little gal!
I would say that when she rolled over on her back and her mouth was gaping she probably literally had the wind knocked out of her when she landed. Maybe.
I know you will keep a close eye on her but I would not handle her for a few days because she might be a bit sore.
Take out any climbing opportunities out of her tank. Do one warm soak for 15 minutes at 80-85 degrees once a day. Also, do NOT handle her besides for moving her to the soaking tub and back
