Ontogenetic Color Change

I thought it would be fun to have thread to share some of the baby vs juvenile vs adult pics we have of our animals that experience OCC as they change. Ontogenetic color change is the permanent color change that an animal goes through as it matures to an adult. An example would be Green Tree Pythons hatching as yellow or red neonates and maturing into green adults. A number of colubrid species go through some pretty drastic OCC. some good examples are North American rat snakes, as well as a number of pituophis species.

I’ll start it off. This my male FL pine snake. The first pic is from the day arrived in Nov. 2024. He was about a month old at that time. The second is from Sept. 2025. He’s changed a ton in less than a year.

Please share examples from your collection here in this thread. Thanks!

Wow! That’s quite a change with that pine!

I always like the difference between hatchling and adult Okeetee corn snakes.

Corns in general have a good color up but Okeetees are my favorite. That’s a nice one.

Yeah, I was surprised when I took a look back at the pictures from when he arrived. The current picture came out with a little more grey washed looked than what I see with my eyes. He has more “white” in person. I knew he would change as he matures but his markings going from dark brown as hatchling to purple and rusty red down by his tail at a year old is a pleasant surprise. I’m sure he’ll look even more different a year from now.

Don’t have any adult photos of them because well… they aren’t adults yet, but these photos do show a pretty drastic change!

That one on the right is pretty drastic. What are the genetics involved with that one?

Not as big a change as the FL pine I previously shared but this hypo stillwater bull has changed quite a bit over two years.

The left one is a super pastel super Enchi Mojave Special
The right is a pastel enchi Mojave Special het Orange Ghost
Mojave Special is just a very beautiful and underrated combo in general. Even as adults they still have some very nice color to them

I love ontogenetic color changes!! Here are a few of my favorites so far (keeping in mind that a lot of these animals aren’t fully adults yet).

My Vietnamese Blue Beauty, Opal, when she was about two months old (more green hues) vs. now about a year and a half old (significantly more blue/grey):

My Boa constrictor longicauda (Peruvian long-tailed boa), who is one of my absolute favorite color changers. Four months vs. now (about two and a half years):

Now I’m cheating a little bit with this one because this is two different animals, but my adult laticinctus bamboo rat snake vs. her future boyfriend who is still a baby:

And now my favorites: the chahoua geckos. SO unassuming as babies, so stunning as adults. My female Maze (4 months old vs. two years old):

And last but not least, my other female chahoua gecko Birch (three months old vs. now two years old):

Bamboo rats are definitely starting to grow on me. Those colors are fantastic and I’ve seen how bright a few babies look in person.
