So just pulled my very first clutch out of the incubator on Day 50 to “burp” the eggs, took press and seal off, and noticed the eggs looking very dehydrated from what I’ve researched. I went the water beads route for substrate and made sure there was plenty of water through the entire incubation and had my thermostat set on 89.3. I know the eggs will deflate a bit towards the end of incubation but these look a bit extreme. I had planned on cutting the eggs on day 56 but wanted some opinions with them looking so deflated. None of the eggs seem to be going bad or getting moldy so just wanted to make sure everything is looking ok to still cut on day 56 have still have viable hatchlings. Thanks in advance!
This is perfectly normal to be happening late in incubation.
If the humidity and temperature is right, theres no mould growth, no off or foul odors, no signs of failure to incubate everything should be alright. I wouldn’t worry that much unless notice any of those things beginning to occur.
The egg shell with greatly thin towards the end of incubation along with a lot of the egg contents being absorbed by the snake which gives the eggs that very deflated look.
I must ask why you want to cut the eggs? I get cutting after a few have already pipped but I’d advise against cutting before then.
I know some people like to and others that do not like to cut their eggs but I don’t want to leave it to fate on them having their egg tooth to get out. I’ve heard and seen horror stories from both sides, so mainly a peace of mind decision on my part. Plus my kids have watched hundreds of egg cutting videos and are excited about doing our own.
Well I hope all goes good on your end.
Even then I don’t think any intervention is necessary until after day 55, all of the eggs seem to be good for where they are at incubation wise.
What was the pairing?
These are from a (F) Lesser Pewter x (M) Pastel Desert Ghost
Nice pairing. You should get some cute hatchlings. I actually paired up some similar genes last year…no desert ghost tho.
But I agree. The eggs look perfectly normal. They’ll start pipping after the shell softens and deflates like this. =)
Awesome, thanks for the reassurance you all! Just like to ask and make sure I’m doing things the right way being my first clutch! Have 7-8 more pairings going so want to work out any kinks I can before they drop!
