Hey! I was wondering if I should rescue a crestie from PetSmart, and give it a better life-or should I buy one from Morph?
Buying an animal from a chain store is not rescuing. That crestie will just be replaced with another one because it shows the company there is demand for that species. Your best bet is to research breeders and purchase from one, either at an expo or via MorphMarket. Also make sure you’re fully prepared for your gecko before purchase with an enclosure, the proper food and lighting, etc.
wow–okay will do!
Yup. Can confirm. PetSmart has a system that keeps track of animal inventory. The pet care manager is supposed to do a basic inventory check once a week to make sure numbers match and a full on everything gets triple checked count a couple times a year.
When an animal’s count is lowered it sends a message to the wholesale breeder of what they need restocked. If a few are sold in a shorter time than usual it may even request additional animals be sent.
@noodlehaus Just wanted to say I did get one from PetSmart, I saw it sitting there with a crappy home, and he was on his back. They were using a 250-watt basking no UVB in a tank less than ten gallons. One fake plant and they would never spray the tank. Along with this, they would only feed him mealworms. Even worse, he was housed in a long tank, along with 5 others. I had to rescue him. Now he is living in a tall, big tank with plenty of heat and water. I supply his food with mini crickets, 5 types of repashy, and a few types of pangea. When I got him, he was 2.6 grams. Now I got him up to about seven.
