I’ve owned whites tree frogs for four years now and even after all this time my plants keep dying I genuinely cannot fathom why. I always make sure to get them from good professional places my temperature and humidity is perfect, i have proper lighting, and I never see my frogs trampling them. What could be the problem? Also heres my newest frog as a little bonus.
Could be a number of things, could be frog urine, could be the soil quality, could be very specific care needs of whatever type of plants you’ve purchased, could be root rot from overly wet soil thats unable to properly drain, which is a very common problem I see in terrariums.
Whats your care been like for the types of plants you’ve used in your frog enclosure?
I regularly check the soil to make sure its moisture levels are good, maybe i need to dig around more. I will research root rot more though, and I buy pretty basic easy to care for plants like dracaena, pothos, and spider plants, etc. I also try to give them an even mix of the UVB and the basking lamp.
I will research everything you said though thank you!
Do you have an LED grow light for them? Depending on the intensity of the basking lap and UVB you may be burning the leaves.
Excess moisture and root rot usually develops at the very bottom of the substrate layer if there is not a drainage layer for excess water to drain into.
A grow light is a great! I actually think I have one thank you. I also do have a drainage layer.
Pics of the dead /dying plants may help.
In an enclosed area, vivs especially, fungus and insects are usually the cause of problems. Incorrect Ph can cause failures as can excessive nutrients.
The water used can cause issues as well. I find that softened water has too much salt for some types of plant whereas others are not bothered at all. Excessive water is also troublesome.
Are the plants just wilting and falling over or is there damage to the leaves?
If you have a clean up crew they may not be getting enough food and are eating the roots.
Personally, I had a problem with leaf damage and found that the bugs were chewing them up. I now toss vegetable scraps into the enclosures and my plants recovered quite quickly.
I don’t think there are any problems with the Ph, I will try putting vegetable scraps in there, I have noticed a recent outbreak of my cleanup crew. thank you!
