sadly my crested gecko was attacked last night by my cat and her one eye is red bloodshot. I don’t see any scratches anywhere else. But I can’t afford to take her to the vet at this moment due to financial problems. I just want to know what to look for and make her comfortable She was in a bioactive enclosure but I put her in a paper towel and container for now so nothing gets in her eye. Her tail is still intact and her other eye is ok . Just need suggestions what I can do first I know there probably a way to do before Vet. Anything helps please .
Cresties are fairly hardy, so the main concern would imo be a possible infection. Since there’s no visible wounds, i would personally keep her in a quarantine setup, which it seems like you’re already doing, and just keep an eye on her for the next few weeks. If there were any “normal” wounds i would’ve advised some kind of chlorhexidine solution to clean them, but since it’s the eye that seems to likely be affected, i think it’s better to wait and see. Eyes are so delicate that i unfortunately don’t think there’s a ton you can do safely on your own.
Yeah definitely give her some water, id probably wait with the food for a day or two, and just leave her alone as much as possible while still making sure she’s ok.
The downside with cats is that even an indoor only cat can cause some crazy infections from a bite or scratch.
I would keep it as clean and calm as possible.
You might be able to pick up sterile saline eye drops from a pharmacy and an eyedropper to carefully flush the area and keep it clear of debris too.
The eye itself still looks okay other than the color. I really hope it was just a good thump that cause a vessel to bleed a bit. If you are really lucky it will just remain a strange color or the blood will slowly break down over time.
The next is a hard pill to swallow. But I say this as someone who is concerned for the animal.
If I was in your position, I would take the time to look up a reputable reptile rescue in your area. Hopefully one exists or a reptile shop can suggest one that isn’t under qualified. Sometimes even dog rescue groups can offer some support.
Hopefully nothing will happen and you will have some info handy for the future, but if anything starts to look swollen or infected I would immediately look to relinquish the animal to a group who can get the necessary care and medication.
Unfortunately many people don’t consider the importance of having the funds available in case the reptile needs medical attention such as in situations like this.
I agree with this wholeheartedly. If it were me I would seek this help proactively. That little gecko’s eye looks painful to me. If an infection breaks out the little fella will need medication sooner than later.
@melojell0 Please don’t take this post as a slam against you because it is not. Things happen. However our main objective here is the health and well being of the animal in question. The advice given here is based on that.
