Hi, I recently got two leopard geckos and ever since I separated them bean (the male) has been acting weird, staying in his moist hide, not eating, etc. his stomach feels hard and his tail is skinnier, especially at the tip, he also weighs less (13g). I’m worried about him . Is he sick, did he eat the coco fiber in his moist hide?? Is it impaction, or maybe parasites? He’s also turned kind of a greenish/brown color :(. I’m super worried.
He looks to be at a healthy weight. If he ate coco fiber nothing would really happen, it would just pass through him. Him staying on the humid hide and being a darker color may just be because he is gong to be shedding soon.
But what are you feeding and how often? How long has it been from when he started losing weight to now? What are your temperatures?
Is it possible to get a picture on the belly? Maybe putting him in a clear container we can see from underneath if he wiggles too much.
Ok, thanks, that must be it, it’s been like a few weeks? Idk. I’ll check the temps when I get home, I feed him every few days, usually dubias but also meal worms, he just skipped one feeding, it just made me worried with everything else. Also is his stomach being hard bad? It could just be me exaggerating. Idk, I’m just new to reptiles and I’m still kind of nervous when anything changes.
Ok, I’ll do that when I get home.
The warm side is around 90F and the cold side is around 80F
Hmm… Really hard to make out anything there.
It does look pretty round from the photo there.
I guess my concern is that the sexes are backwards and bean could be gravid. They’re both adult size so it can be possible. Are you sure Bean was the male? Does he have the waxy v shape on underside of the back legs and the bulge right after the cloaca?
Yeah, I think so… of course I could be wrong…
How can I know for surely? What should I do?
Is this the one that was staying in the moist hide a lot?
Edit to add: I wonder if it’s looking for a nesting spot if it is indeed gravid…
That’s what I was thinking and yes.
Tbh I know nothing about gecko breeding even though I have a variety of them I don’t think there’s much more that you can do……
Ok, should I be worried? Sorry I know you said you don’t know so I should leave you alone, but I thought I might ask…
Sometimes they do just like to stay in the moist hide. I have a girl who does that all the time regardless of if she’s gonna lay eggs or not.
But when they stop eating, hang out in there a lot and have a big belly it can be the big 3 signs.
Usually they lay 2 eggs at a time. Sometimes one. And they will lay up to 16 eggs in one season. It’s a bit late so maybe they’ll just pop these out and be fine.
The way to tell male from female is the area under the thighs will have a line waxy looking line on each thigh in males. And then they have the bulge after the cloaca.
Well if I was you I would probably be a bit concerned. If you can take a picture of her belly for @armiyana to see you might get an answer on female or male.
You can also make a vet appointment for Bean to be checked…… and you are not bothering me!
Ok, thanks guys, I’ll check when I get home in a few hours, thank you I really appreciate it
I’m pretty sure bean is a male… and lentil definitely looks like a female, bean is acting an= bit more normal now, but I’ll watch him.
I hope he keeps doing well for you!
