I’m new to the world of reptiles (I come from the aquarium hobby) and I’ve got an Ikea display cabinet that I’d like to convert into a terrarium. It measures about 95 cm long, 80 cm high, and 35 cm wide, which gives a nice volume… although it’s a bit small for a ball python (I was thinking of a Chrysopelea paradisi, the paradise flying snake, but I doubt it would be happy).
I’m wondering if a small pair of lizards, like Tribolonotus gracilis, wouldn’t be a better fit than a snake. I’m totally open to your suggestions! Which reptiles would suit this type of terrarium? How should I set it up best (substrate, hiding spots, heat sources, plants, etc.)?
Thanks in advance for your advice and ideas!
P.S. I fully intend to replace one of the glass doors with mesh.
Ohhhhh! What about little viper geckos? Or even a crocodile skink? They stay small, although I’m not sure on how much room those little dudes actually need lol I do agree on this enclosure being more suitable for a lizard(s),not sure how you feel about smaller lizards, but good dust day gecko are amazing! Either way, whichever you choose, I’d love to see what you come up with for the enclosure!
Nice! I would spend days thinking about how to set this up and probably months doing it.
You will need lots of cover for whatever you decide on.
I wouldn’t worry about adding a screen for the sliding door. I would wire in a 2" cpu fan for circulation though. With a shroud.
Make sure the gap between the doors is tight enough to prevent escape.
What is the bottom made of? If it’s something that can be drilled or cut, I’d try to route any electric or probes through it so they can be hidden easily.
As an aquarium person, I’m sure you already thought of a water feature. If so and the bottom can be modified, cat litter pans work great. Even if you can’t counter sink it they can be used for large modular plant pots.
Keep us updated on your progress.
