Quick question for all you lovely people on here. I generally feed frozen rats to all my snakes and occasionally i have a snake that doesnt feel like eating. I will usually re freeze the rat that wasnt eaten but i usually only re freeze once amd if the snake refuses again i toss the rat. Do any of yall refreeze and if so how many times before you consider the rat badm
I typically don’t re freeze but that’s because my biggest eats anything at any time and would eat herself to death if she could. So she usually will eat the smaller ones that don’t get eaten
Yeah, same here. Nothing gets wasted with an adult boa around!
With frozen, I honestly just toss them if one of my snakes won’t eat them after the other refuses.
Generally I feed my trash compactors last so if anyone else is fussy they get it instead. If everyone else does fine I end up needing to thaw an extra couple for them after.
Remember that feeders aren’t butchered or cleaned up in any way so bacteria can start building up internally as soon as they reach temps over 45 and they don’t reach a temperature that’s sufficient to kill it off. Freezing inhibits growth but won’t kill the bacteria
Lately though I’ve been raising my own feeders… so after I euthanize them I offer all my noodles some food and any that aren’t eaten get frozen.
I don’t re-freeze. The only snake of mine who occasionally refuses is also the only one who won’t strike off tongs, so I usually just put her mouse in her enclosure, go to bed, and then check in the morning to see if she’s eaten it. Usually she has, but if she hasn’t, I figure it’s no good after sitting out all night and just toss it.
I suppose I might consider re-freezing if one of my strike feeders ever refused, since the rodent would have only been warm for a few minutes at that point. But since my strike feeders are a blood python and a boa, I might never get the chance to even consider re-freezing one of their rodents.
Depending on how the rodent is unthawed, I occasionally refreeze once, but lately I have not had to……
The few times my boy has refused in the past, ive usually just fed the feeder to my cat. If human grade food shouldn’t be refrozen after thawing, Im not gonna take any chances with my pets’ food personally, just not worth it
