I understand the reasoning behind the wanted change, but I don’t think it is important to change it, as it gives opportunities to share misconceptions and falsehoods with those who are less knowledgeable regarding herps.
I tend to agree with Dav. Not only is the name based on misinformation, but it doesn’t make sense to have two different names for kingsnakes and milk snakes when they’re both in the same genus. I’m totally on board with calling them red kingsnakes.
