If you have connected Square to utilize our Buy Now feature, you can now request payment by credit card on all ad types, including auctions, sales, ads with variable shipping, etc.

How to Use- Seller

When a buyer sends you an inquiry, and you agree to sell the ad to them, you can request payment by card. To do this:

  • Click on the messenger action (the + icon) in the lower right corner of the message thread.
  • Select “Request Payment by Card”
  • Input the total sales amount + shipping, and then click “Request.”
  • The buyer will be sent a link to securely input their credit card. Once the credit card is entered, the order will automatically be accepted and created.
    • You will NOT need to approve the order like you do when using “Buy Now.”
    • If you need to refund the transaction, you will need to do so via the Square app directly.

How to Use- Buyer

Once you arrange details with the seller and they request the payment by card, you will receive a message with a secure link to input that information.

  • Click “Pay Now.”
  • Input your credit card information. The seller will NOT be able to see this information.
  • Once payment is accepted, the order will automatically be created.

Hi Britni, that’s a cool thing to add!

I’ve got a question. I’ve been happily using the “Buy Now” feature for a while. It streamline and simplifies a lot of things. Are there any plans in the works to allow for a customer putting down a deposit on an animal using this? That would be a nice capability to have. It could be a help with “Request Payment by Card” or “Buy Now.”

Separate note, I feel silly saying this, but I will in case it helps someone else. When I first saw a “Buy Now” button on an ad, I thought it was a terrible idea. I would never just sell an animal without talking to the prospective buyer! Well, that’s not what happens. If a customer clicks “Buy Now,” you (the seller) get a request to purchase the animal. You then either agree or decline to sell. (I do understand that this isn’t the care with "Request Payment by Card.)

We are working on allowing payments through this new method.
You are correct, we do not require sellers to “accept” the order with this new feature, since you manually have to request the payment. Most sellers will not do so until they have already discussed everything they need to with the buyer. It’s a bit different from “Buy Now” since the buyer is initiating the payment.
