Gene Request Form

Please fill the below form out to the best of your ability. Answers do not need to be lengthy. If appropriate you may forward this request to someone who is more able to supply the answers.

Facts

Species: Ball Python
Name of Gene: Axanthic (SRP)
First produced by whom: Snake River Pythons (Mike McGoveran)
Year First Produced: 2023
Genetics Type (Incdom/Codom/Recessive/Polygenic/etc): Recessive
In complex with other genes?: No
Other names/aliases for it?: No
Description: Black, silver and white. Missing yellow, brown and orange pigment.

Appearance; What it does/looks like?

  • Head: The head of an Axanthic Ball Python is similar to that of a Normal Ball Python, but with less earthy tones.
  • Body: Axanthic Ball Pythons’ bodies tend to have reduced markings with the “alien heads” and a pale blushing along the black “puzzle” pattern.
  • Belly:
  • Tail: The tail of the Axanthic Ball Python follows the same coloration as the rest of its body, with blank “alien heads” to either side of a dorsal stripe.

Proven Lines: No known proven lines
Related Genes: No known related traits

Proven: This morph has been reproduced for 2 years successfully. To what degree it is proven out to not just be polygenic?
Unique: This morph has been tested by RGI and shown to not be related to existing forms of Axanthic, including VPI, TSK, Black Axanthic, GCR, or MJ. Why do you believe this is a new morph and not an existing one?

Problems: No known issues. Any problems?
**History: In 2020 Mike McGoveran of Snake River Pythons in Idaho purchased an adult female Pied Ball Python that had no other known traits. She produced pied clutches as expected in 2021 and 2022. Then in the 2023 season she was paired with an unrelated male that was purchased from a different breeder. This male was Black head Enchi Het. Pied with no other known traits. This pairing produced 6 hatchlings including a Blackhead Axanthic Pied, a Blackhead Enchi Axanthic Het. Pied, and an Enchi Pied with Axanthic paradoxing. This pairing was repeated in 2024 and produced two more Axanthics. ** The history behind its discovery?

Below is the response I got from RGI. I’ll leave it up the admins as to what is done with this, but I think compatibility breeding would be in order.

“We can only test for VPI, TSK, and GCR/MJ Axanthic. There is the Joliff line that is out there, and is not new…he could have that but, he could also have something new…we can’t say for sure because we can’t test for Joliff.”

“It could also be a secondary mutation of any one of those gene’s that is compatible with VPI, TSK, or GCR/MJ. That happens alot as well.“

Thank you for looking into this.

It is my hope that while I pursue further testing and proving of this gene, that a listing category be created for it. My reasoning is that Black Axanthic and GCR have tested out to be identical to TSK and MJ respectively, yet they have their separate listings. I do understand that this was done before testing was available, but given the testing results it’s hard to argue that they have as much legitimacy as SRP.

SRP Axanthic has had 5 different animals tested against all existing Axanthics that have a test, and is negative across the board. I purposefully waited until I’d had every available test done and redone before making this request. This would allow me to offer animals for sale. As it stands now, there isn’t an accurate category that I can use.

I do plan to buy a Jolliff female at some point and grow her up for a test breeding with one of my SRP males, but that will take about 3 years. It will also take time to figure out if this is a secondary mutation of VPI, TSK or MJ, but I plan to work with RGI to get those answers as well.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Do we know when the next update will be and if (SRP) Axanthic will be included?

I currently have several animals I’d like to list, but I don’t want to list them as normal wild type, and can’t list them as any other Axanthic. I’d rather wait for accurate tags that will direct buyers to my animals.

Thanks,
