I live in farm country, was on my way home from town and witnessed this guy in the road. He almost got hit twice before I was able to get to him. Walked him across and into a yard after snapping these. Little male painted turtle, from what I can tell. He made my day.
Good for you! Good for him, too, obviously . Love that first picture.
One of the perks of living where I do is the wildlife. He’s not the first, nor will he likely be the last turtle I escort across our busy county road. He was perfectly content to just stay tucked in shell while I handled him, no attempts at escape. He’s lucky it was me and not a car or bald eagle that found him, first.
I know what you mean! I’ve had the privilege of assisting many turtles across many roads myself.
At this point my family knows, if someone else is driving and I yell, “STOP!”, it’s pull over and wait time. Thankfully most of them are just as big of animal lovers as I am. Not nearly as brave, though. Still get looked at like I’m crazy when I just pick up a snapper without a care.
Don’t you love getting those looks though
@caryl Why did the turtle cross the road? To get to the “shell” station!
Lol wow, @caron! Good to know someone else is a cheesy as me!
