Retic got Stuck

Our Reticulated python recentely got stuck in a homemade hide. We managed to free him by cutting it away from his body but he was proper stuck in there, couldn’t move him a millimetre.

He has some small wounds and ripped some scales off his body, we are mostly concerned about internal injuries or getting up tomorrow to a dead snake.

We have iodine on his wounds to try and help. Abything else we can do?

Pic attached of him stuck, he was trying to twist to get free…im stupirsed he didnt bite us.

I believe @armiyana had a very similar issue happen to her Retic

I’d just keep a close eye on yours and see how they do for a while, if you notice any odd behavior or movement that indicates pain or decline I’d get them to a vet.

Otherwise just clean the surface abrasions, keep them dry and watch them for infections.

Personally, as someone who’s had this happen to a much smaller bodied snake, I’d suggest if you have the means, taking him in for a check up as soon as you can. Do you know how long he was stuck for?

@cmsreptiles is correct, I did have something similar happen with a vent in an enclosure. And the most important question is “how is he moving?”

I think @noodlehaus has the right idea, especially since he wasn’t able to be moved and you had to cut him out. That is definitely a predicament where he may have broke a rib.
Actual open skin from cutting him out or just scraping against the rough wood can be more likely to get infected, so at the very least I would consider checking if the vet recommends antibiotics just in case.

My girl didn’t loose any scales and only had a single small ‘scrape’ that actually just turned out to just be from how she was stuck and faded after a few hours. We were able to maneuver her back out after a small struggle. And the issue was a smooth plastic vent she uncapped…So her issue was definitely more easily a wait and see.

The situation rattled me enough to have me post here in frustration. I don’t know how I would have handled having to cut her free. I know how scary this is and I hope your boy does okay.

Yikes, that sounds super stressful for both you and the snake. :grimacing: Given the way you described the injuries, I’d personally try to schedule a vet visit if it were my snake, just to be safe. It’s entirely possible he’d heal just fine on his own, but I’d want to be sure he doesn’t need antibiotics or have any broken ribs. Sounds like he was pretty stuck, poor guy. Hope he has a speedy recovery!
