Purchased this Russo Red yesterday and I am curious what gene causes the stripping along the back with spots on its sides.
Could be jungle causing it.
I was eyeballing the Sterling gene for a while. Some of my favorites were the Russo Red hypo sterlings I saw. I want to say Sterling hets also have some striping to them. Unfortunately not something you’ll be able to say for sure without breeder information.
Beautiful boa!
I was leaning toward the Het sterling as well looking at Russo’s website and seeing some of the offspring he has produced. My only option to find out if it was sterling is to get another sterling. Which is a great idea.
I passed this specific Boa up about a week or 2 ago and when I went back it was still there. I needed another male for breeding project and this happened to be a male.
Reminds me of a super striped boa more than a jungle.
Here is a super striped boa.
The way the striping starts at the head / neck is what I see in all the striped boas I have seen.
I was looking at these genetics as a possibility as well. In most examples I have seen have the darker stripe down the spin rather than on each side of the spine. That is why I was ruling the gene out. If you look at Russo’s website he has some of his sterlings posted and they appear similar to my specimen. I have reached out in local reptile groups to find the breeder and hoping to get true lineage.
Maybe Matt can give his opinion as he breeds very nice Sterlings.
There were alot of russo reds bred to sterlings so a sterling project might throw you some surprises! I wouldnt go as far as to say its a possible het or het but id go in the sterling direction. Alot of those did have striping and no jungle.
I appreciate the info. I couldnt pass up the deal for him compared to the russo reds i saw on here as far as price goes. The pet store said he was a biter but hes been chill for me since i got him. I am definitely wanting to find a sterling female in the future to pair him with.
