My two and a half year old ksb has been a little different since his last shed. He looks great, is very active, but won’t eat. Acts like he’s hungry, is often in hunting mode, but when I present the mouse, he retreats, almost acting afraid of it. This little dude has been the poster child for sand boas since I’ve had him. Eating like clockwork every 2 weeks. He hasn’t eaten since January 31st. In all other respects he seems happy and healthy. I just don’t understand this refusal to eat. Anyone else ever have similar issues?
Could be he’s looking around for a girlfriend, At 2 and a half he’s an adult. As long as you have not changed anything with his husbandry or enclosure, I would not worry about it too much at this point. If you have a reptile scale you could weigh him and keep track of his weight. Unless he starts to lose a significant amount of weight I would continue to offer him food every 2 weeks as usual. I am confident he will resume eating eventually….
Don’t hesitate to come back with any concerns or questions……
He’s lost 7 grams, but he’s still a bit of a chonker at 157. He’s not lethargic, not hiding…still out and about exploring every day. Haven’t changed his enclosure, his food, nothing out of the ordinary. He did take a mouse last night, but it was almost like it was more of a defensive grab, because the mouse was invading his space, as opposed to the fact that he was hungry. Because he took it but never ate it. I try a mouse every few days, I’ll just keep trying that for now. Thanks for the reply!
If he was chunky then maybe he was to the point that he just isn’t hungry. Maybe his body is telling him enough for awhile which can happen with snakes.
I definitely would offer food no less than 7 days apart. You are stressing him by offering him food every few days. Give him some space and time. Just keep track of his weight and of course his overall appearance. Snakes can go forever without eating. In the wild it’s either feast or famine.
Thanks, i will do that
appreciate the feedback!
Be sure and keep us updated on your boy and when he’s eating again we would love a pic or two! But in the interim try not to hold him frequently. I would just keep maintaining him with fresh water and enclosure cleaning……
My boy Fezzik. Will keep you posted, and thanks again ![]()
Oh wow he certainly is a bit of a chunky sandy! I don’t think you have to worry about him not having an appetite at this time. I can’t believe he’s climbing! Usually sand boas are buried in their substrate. But then again it’s been said that most all snakes will climb if given the chance!
Thanks for the great photo! ![]()

I have three of them, and they’re all very active explorers. Two of them love to climb, the other one is always out and about but not quite as adventurous as that. I think they’ve spoiled me, from what I hear most people with ksbs almost never see them.
Yes mine were always hidden, unlike my rosy that is usually out and about. He never burrows……
Do keep us updated on Fezzik and thank you! ![]()
