I’ve been seriously looking into Argentine Black & White Tegus and wanted to hear from people who have actually kept them long-term.
I currently keep a Savannah monitor, so I’m familiar with large, intelligent, food-driven lizards and the commitment they require. Judging by what I know from monitors, the appetite side of things shouldn’t be a problem for me, but I’d love to hear how tegus compare in real life.
A few things I’m especially curious about:
- What surprised you most after getting your first tegu?
- How much daily interaction do they realistically need?
- What are they like as adults compared to monitors?
- What part of tegu ownership do people tend to underestimate?
- If you could go back, would you still choose a tegu?
I’d also love to see photos of your tegus, their enclosures, outdoor setups, enrichment ideas, or anything you’re particularly proud of. Seeing real-world examples is often more useful than reading care sheets.
For attention, here’s my completely accurate scientific reconstruction of what a tegu looks like when it’s hungry
