And it will take months before the area is fully healed over. Along with the area never quite healing well enough for normal mobility and eating. Just make sure to give the extra soaks and humidity needed during shedding time to make sure it all keeps healing well.
When she does start eating, try to keep the meals from stretching the area too much because it can cause regurges. My guy should have been eating small rats, but we kept him on mice to avoid that. He’s the only snake I have that I would feed 2x a week because of that. He was rescued years ago, but it still took a while before I could size his food a little closer to what he should be eating. He also still eats weekly instead of every 2 or so weeks like my other adult males.
Update
She ate Monday morning! It was just a small mouse, but i think thats all she will be able to handle right now. It made a very small lump in her belly so I won’t go any bigger for a while. I had to do the injections every day for 5 days and now we are doing every other day for a month. Most of her stuck shed has come off now. Vast improvement already!
That is fantabulous news @rxwitchi! I am so thankful that you have her and you are giving her the care that she desperately needs and so well deserves! I believe she will keep bouncing back quickly. I also believe in my heart that she knows, in her own way, that she is safe with you and everything is going to be just fine!
God bless you for taking on this healing journey with her and for her! Definitely keep us updated on this little lady’s progress!
Thank you for your kind words! I think she knows, too. She is the sweetest snake out of all the 11 I have. She is always so relaxed and she just lays her head on me. I will do everything I can to take care of her
Hunger is a great sign for these guys.
If you do see her start to go into blue I would definitely hold off that meal.
Eating causes a lot of things to happen metabolically in snakes. That can easily affect how the snake will shed. A triple whammy of food, shed and wound healing could end up with a really rough shed, even with the already difficult to shed wound areas.
I’m so glad she’s feeling like feeding! That’s really a good sign. She’s making progress in this long journey of healing, thanks to your excellent care.
I’m sorry I have been slacking on pictures! I will try to post some tomorrow. She has lost around 30 grams so I am a little concerned about that. The vet didn’t seem concerned about it when I took her for her follow up since she is eating regularly now. I feed frozen and Wednesday night I had the mouse in the tongs and she actually struck at it and wrapped it for the first time! I was so proud of her that I yelled LOL I was like YES GIRL!!! I ordered some rat pups to try to feed her since rats are more nutritious. I am afraid to go too much bigger with her belly wound. I just hope she will eat them. The previous owner had told me that all she would eat was mice so that’s what we started with. The vet gave me 10 more shots to give her so it will be a total of almost 2 months of shots. We have another follow up appointment in 4 weeks. I will keep you all updated! Thank you for caring so much about this sweet angel!
I’m so so elated at these great reports! The fact that she’s striking and coiling is tremendous progress! And if she doesn’t want to eat the new rats then just rub a ft mouse on the ft rat to scent it a bit. But hopefully you won’t have to do this!
Kudos to you for taking on such a monumental task! You are definitely on the downhill slope now!
That’s really great news! So glad she’s eating on her own.
I definitely agree that for right now feeding smaller is better. Don’t stretch the healing belly too much. Once she is looking good you can try sizing her up slowly. My boy still eats slightly smaller than I normally feed a snake his size. But he tends to get fed a little more often.
She looks scabby which is much better than raw but she does have a ways to go. Food in her insides will help her heal on her outsides. I will say it again, God bless you @rxwitch for literally saving her. If any snake ever bonds with its human, she should forever bond with you. I believe in my heart that she somehow understands what you are doing for her….
It’s always going to look worse before better. My burn boy looked almost identical. It’s not easy taking on a severe one like this so thank you for working with her
