Anyone have any good recommendations on specific brands/places to find good racks? Like the wire shelving units.
I’m looking at getting two of these to go along one wall. 18” is the minimum depth I want, but feel that 24” might be a nice thing to have access to. Also casters are nice.
Open to any suggestions. I haven’t checked Amazon yet.
Lowe’s has a great selection. We have a huge Lowe’s nearby, which I know not everyone does. I’ve bought some there. Decent prices plus I liked actually seeing them set up.
That’s fair, and @caron racks I’ve looked at ones like those, but I really need a minimum of 18” sadly, because I’m going to be placing some of my glass bioactive stuff on them as I build them out. Like the 18x18x24 enclosures and I’m building a 36x18x18 right now too.
I’ll check out Lowe’s and Home Depot, but may just end up going with the ones I linked, based on price and I mean, what can go wrong with good kitchen/restaurant equipment racks?
Nothing at all wrong with that concept. The ones which are build for restaurants or garages can handle the more than the weight needed, aka should stay stable for years.
Here is a small rack I made with a wire shelving system. I used the Sterilite 15 qt. tub # 1754 for baby boas and the Sterilite 74 qt. tub # 1969 for sub adults and boas about 6 feet long and less than 12 to 15 lbs. The 1754 tub measures 17 inches x 11 inches x 6 - 3/8 inches, and the 1969 tub measures 44 inches x 19 - 3/4 inches x 6 - 3/8 inches. You can fit 8 of the 1969 tubs or 36 of the 1754 tubs on this rack.
Set up like this picture cost me about
$350 with 4 inch X 44 inch flexwatt
on each shelf. I made this in the late 90s, so it’s probably a little more expensive now to make.
I also have 1/4" masonite on each shelf to cover the flexwatt so the tubs don’t set on or rub the flexwatt.
Ended up getting the 24”x48”x72” racks from webstrauant store. I like they, they are rated for 400 lbs per shelf, but I wouldn’t trust it honestly. They have a little bit of a bow when weight is put on them. Here’s a quick picture I snapped last night after rearranging. Probably going to do some more organizing as I try to maximize my space!
Well that’s the whole point right? Haha. But yeah, I’ve got other enclosures that aren’t on there yet. A second 18x18x18 and a 36x18x18 that’s going to go where the tub is once I build it out.
Then I’ve got to set up my shoebox tubs for the hatchling gargoyle geckos as they arrive. And then on top of that, looking at upgrading to a nice, higher end misting system for multiple enclosures
He and I had a conversation about that a few days ago. I suggested Redline instead. FedEx has been having major issues lately with rerouting to stupid out of the way places in transit like Dallas TX to the final destination to our area……
Glad he is careful and you are patient! I had trouble getting my 2 girls from him………
Yeah, I mean on one hand the thought of it going through Texas just makes me grateful it would miss the possibility of getting inevitably delayed in Memphis. But this heat man; it isn’t doing us any favors right now. I think the high here tomorrow is 97, too hot for me lol.
He booked the first shipment through redline, the one that was supposed to come last week, but that’s the one that routed through TX sadly. So we’ll get it figured out. I’m out of the country the week after for a few days, so just a struggle right now
Looking wonderful! Every time I look at your works, Nathan, I really wish you’d come to my house and build me a reptile room.
Not to hijack the topic, but booking through Redline won’t make a difference, other than that their customer service is excellent and features actual humans, unlike Fedex. They have no control over routing. The only difference with Redline, SYR, Reptiles2You, etc. is that they buy huge volumes of labels so they have negotiated with FedEx to get volume discounts. FedEx is a bigger mess than usual now, closing a lot of ship centers’ counter service or ceasing to handle live animals. It’s a huge issue in some places, meaning extra hours to ship or receive animals.
Now if only the weather will behave and we can all see Nathan’s next new animal!
Thank you! I really appreciate that. Sometimes I wish I had more time to dedicate to mine too, but don’t we all? I love doing enclosures and working towards building whatever I can for my animals. Trying to do more diy stuff lately too, which is fun.
And I can give a hint, it’s a relative of one of @caron’s animals!
I’m terrible at giving hints and keeping surprises… my wife can attest to that lol. So I won’t say anything else until it’s here and in my hands. You’ll just have to wait!
