Shipping ball python with slight temperature variation between destinations

Hi there,

I’m planning to ship a ball python within the next 2 days to a new owner. I’m overnighting to a Fedex distribution center. After researching on the internet I can’t find a clear answer.

I’m planning to drop off the ball python at a Fedex location at around 5:00pm. The high for tomorrow and the next day is 66/67 degrees.

The destination I am shipping to has a high of 75/77 degrees. Ball python would be picked up at a fedex distribution center most likely by 11am the next day.

Per guidelines I’m told to not use a heat pack if over 70 degrees. However per the guidelines I’m also told if under 70 degrees to use a heat pack. I’m planning to ship in a 12 x 9 x 6 insulated box. Ball python is around 1000 grams.

What do you do with you run into this scenario? Do you avoid shipping until the temps in both places are over 70 degrees?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I absolutely would not use a heat pack in that scenario. If anything, maybe a phase pack. It is always better for a snake to get a little bit cold versus overheating. Overheating will very quickly lead to death. When you ship Priority Overnight, those animals are usually in temperature controlled areas the majority of the way, that don’t really get below about 65ºF.

Here is a video on MM’s YouTube where Marc Bailey explains how he ships & uses heat packs:
