Should I Own a Tegu

Would you recommend a tegu for a person who works 7 hours a day, or are they more for the type of people who have lots of spare time? I love tegus, but I just want what’s best for the animal.

7 hours isn’t that long of a work day. You more of need to know if you have the space, and money to feed them/care for them. They need a lot of space, a lot of quality equipment, and a lot of food. They grow fast and will need a giant enclosure that you will have to build.

Here are the basics for what you will need in this video. Make sure to check your state laws so you know they aren’t illegal to keep.

I’ve heard that blue tegus are generally a bit smaller at around 3 feet. Is this true? Does this at all affect their ease of care?

Personally if you do a tegu, I would go with a black and white.

Black and white tegus are around the same size, so no it doesn’t make them easier to care for. Blue tegus are also a Colombian species if I recall (or at least something I see mixed up with Colombians a lot) and are a lot less friendly/tameable. Black and white tegus are the best pet tegu. There is no such thing as an easy to care for tegu. They are basically an expensive to feed scaley dog that will need a giant enclosure.

I think tegus are one of those animals that, if you have to ask, then probably no.

Yeah, I pretty much decided yesterday that I’m not ready for one.

My daughter’s sister-in-law got one about a month ago. And I’ve kinda got the feeling I’m about to have to build a tegu enclosure.

Personally I would get a tegu of they weren’t illegal in Florida. They are a much better option than other large monitors. If you want a lizard like a monitor but smaller definitely go with a spiny tail monitor.

I’m actually trying to convince the spousal unit that she needs a peach throat monitor.

So far it hasn’t worked.

Yet.

Omg :joy:
Well the other half has just built a big enclosure because apparently we are getting a pair of Kimberley monitors next year :woman_facepalming:t2:
Was going to be Timor’s but he likes the Kimberleys more. I’ve not told him yet that I will be naming them Kimberley (obvious reasons haha) and Kíllian (Kíli for short, from the hobbit)
