It looks like California had a short warm and dry winter whith spring starting early. Males are out and scratching for females and females trying to get some more beauty rest in bromation. This group is still young so not 100% sure on gender but some make it more obvious than others. Some have changed significantly from when they were born that you may not recognize them while others have never been shown. Hope you enjoy and are just as excited as me for your skinks to come out and play or show of the new colors they put on over winter.
I wanna know if anyone else’s blue tongue has done this, this I went to check on Rosie, I saw her crawling around the front of her enclosure, and she was only using her front legs, she looked like she was struggling and rolling around, and the back portion of her body minus her tail was flattened while the front portion was round, to the point where it literally looked like that drawing from a side profile. I thought maybe something had gone horribly wrong and her back portion had been flattened and her back legs paralyzed. I picked her up, she felt a little stiff, I put her under her lamp, and I had never seen anything like this and was deeply confused, so I decided I’d wait 15 minutes and if she was the same I’d bring her to a vet. I left the room, 15 minutes went by, I went back, she was absolutely fine, normal shape, healthy movement, using her back legs, everything was alright. Anything like that happen to anyone else? I’ve seen her go flat before plenty, but every time before she’s flattened her whole body and never seemed to lose control of her back legs.
Wow. I have absolutely no experience with skinks so I am tagging @logar Logan and hopefully he will see this.
Sounds like he was having a seizure of some sort but I know that’s not what was happening……
You make me want one so bad …someday it will happen
Posible to fold backwards with tall cages when trying to climb sides. Injury can look like a dip in back and sometimes not noticeable unles you run finger down center line and they puff up. Big reason why i like low profile cages. Most the time they are ok but never feels good when you see something or think something is wrong.
I wanted to check in on your skink and make sure you are giving apropriate supliments and that you still dont notice the dip. I would hate for MBD to sneak in thinking it was just a fall, twist, or better yet nothing at all only to be surprised with MBD. MBD is a whole topic in of its self and can come from inbreeding despite the efforts you put forth giving the appropriate care. Please dont panic or go down the rabit whole. Just continue appropriate care and be informed.
Ill show some pictures refrence to what I am talking about with regards to the issue with tall cages. Tall cages becomes more problematic during high activity periods in the season and not enough musclemass in the skink or when they flipping backwards insted of sideways. For example females with large amounts of ovum in comparison to there structural development and not being able to use muscles to control body movement can be the corporate to falling backwards insted of just bending sideways. Sometimes it just happens and the only way to prevent it is provide enough substrate with nothing taller than 9 inches. Even 9 inches can cause issues for smaller skinks. This girl has not taken much food and looks bloaded because of the ovum she is producing, however, its better to wait until she is older and more developed before breed but I digress. This muscle mass can cause an issue when trying to scale up the wall to find that stud and mate.
You may or may not notice the dip/bump caused by the prolonged bent posture or bend but it can get more profound as the years go by. This girl will be ok and cant wait to get her into a shorter cage.
Not sure I showed this guy yet. He is called kinky because of his tail and high drive to find a female.
@lumpy which one would you choose or what kind and colors do you like if you could get one. I have been looking at Gekos but my wife said no until Iget rid of what I currently have.
Hopefully you guys enjoy the photo bombing. I look forward to seeing more of your skinks as well.
Danggggg they’re so prettyyyyy.
What kind of geckos lol? I’m curious (For no reason what so ever)
Gargoyle and Leachianus. Lol, I also want green tree pythons but thhose broke my heart to many times in the past and not ready to take them on again yet. My son is to yung but eventually he want to get Tegus. I think tree monitors or pink throats are better but reality sets in and I only have so much bandwidth.
How about you?
I have cresties lol, they’re fun. Been looking to add a Blue Tongue skink to my little collection for a while, the potato lizards are goofy
Yes, I provide supplements, I use uvb light, I use appropriate temperatures. The only thing too different from what you listed is she has about 12 inches of height in her enclosure, it’s 16 inches tall and there’s about 4 inches of substrate. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her sprawling on the wall though, but maybe she has when I wasn’t looking. What are your thoughts? And thank you so much for being concerned and giving what advice you can, I genuinely appreciate it
Probably nothing if she doesnt have anything showing. Skinks do some weird stuff sometimes.
I honestly think she fell backwards and could have hurt her back given the explanation. The dip is exagurated when they go flat because of the injury. It goes back once the puff up if its not serious. You might notice a bump or dip as time goes on. I think its probably nothing and we just beat ourself up because we care about our animals. Either way just keep an eye out to see whats going on.
I love the red…I also am very partial hi contrast . I love the size too…so I like a big one lol
I posted ages ago but figured I show off Murphy, my Northern Blue Tongue. Recently upgraded him from a 40g to a 120g. He’s really enjoying the wiggle room.
Most my skinks are big N’s but kinky is a little on the smaller side compared to my other males. Body is sunset with orange base from magma and whitening tail from the sunrise that shows up from time to time in his magma crossed line.
Cool set up. What company is the cage from?
Ughhh you got me thinking I should get 4 leachianus. 2 pure nuu ana 2 pure pines. Anyway, I will PM you when I get them.
