Just thought id post some currently gravid female corn snake photos. A couple have already prelayshed and noticed 2 more today with eyes blue and cloudy. Also some extra pics for fun.
Next update will be eggies
Feel free to post photos of yours! Love seeing other folks’ corns and kings!
Those ladies are looking large and in charge! Beautiful boys, too. You’re gonna have a plethora of eggs and some incredible looking little ones soon enough!
Just an FYI, however, feeding photos are against the community guidelines, so I removed the one.
Wow, Nitro is so bright even in blue! And Hiro looks like she’s about to pop. Very nice corns! Hope your season goes smoothly.
Nitro is an enigma to me! What popping coloration! Absolutely mind blowing!!!
I’m not a corn snake keeper but I’m certainly a fan of them. I mean, who wouldn’t love Nitro? And I’m equally blown away by Tesla and Nova. Let the egg fest begin! Congratulations!
Congratulations on a successful start. You’re going to be very busy when everybody is hatching!
Oops so sorry about the feeding photo! I actually hadn’t read the rules til just now when i saw that. Now i know though!
Laying update:
Onyxia the MBK is laying right now!
She laid 4 so far and i think i see 2 more so she made 6 maybe! Looks like theres a thin spot in the one eggs thats in the top left
Thanks! Yea, looks like ill be pretty busy. Which im ok with, fortunately im working from home so i have the time. Most of the hatchlings will be given away to good homes and i guess ill sell a few of the nicer ones. I just want the feeder mice and substrate bills to be covered for a while and im good after that!
Wife wont let me breed my own mice and i dont really want to anyway, not a big fan of having to kill anything, even if its in the most humane way possible - i dont wanna be the one to do it!
Hooray for eggs!
Btw, it is a good idea to give your females ample time to finish before you mess with moving eggs. Once you see they’re laying, do something else for at least 8-12 hours. Checking on them too often can stress them, which can actually lead to dystocia.
Im always worried shell roll them around and upside-down if theyre not stuck together. But ive left her be the last few hours. I did peek in a few mins ago and shes still got more to lay. theres another 4 in there right now that are stuck together. But theres definitely a few more for her to lay. I thought i had the count correct at 6 but its 8 laid & more coming! Didnt expect that many. Last time i bred Nigrita was 2011 and she did only 3 eggs
That doesn’t matter at all. Happens in nature all the time. It’s 100% true that the eggs should not be rotated or changed in orientation during incubation, but that is only after a couple of days. It has to do with the gas pocket which will form through the permeable shell and which is used to oxygenate the embryo. It takes time for this to happen. When the eggs are laid, they’re fully prepared to be shifted around during the laying process.
It’s good that you’re aware of the importance of keeping the eggs’ orientation steady. You can relax about it while your females are laying. Give them a chance to get the job done.
Oh thats some of the best information ive learned in a while. Didnt know there was a window that large! The 2 eggs that were stuck together - one had embryo on top, the other was upside down. I seperated them and fixed the orientation of the upside down egg. Thought for sure it wouldnt make it.
So… shes still laying. She laid 8 fertile eggs initially with the last 2 that hadnt moved from their original position inside her body. 12 hours went by and no more progress. (See 1st photo). I did warm water bath 40 mins and a giant bowl of water in her enclosure. 9 hours later still nothing. Im worried at this point. Went to vet. I asked if hed aspirate but he refused. Gave her the usual oxytocin and calcium injection. He said shell lay the reminder within 10 days. This didnt sound right to me but ive known this guy a long time and hes never done me wrong. Got her home and thought that if i offer her a fuzzy mouse maybe itll help. She ate it so ravenously! She had stopped eating 12 days ago. Well. See photos 2, 3 and 4. I just came to check on her and i was fortunate enough to witness her squeeze this perfectly shaped egg out. The second one is 1 inch away from vent at this momemt. She had me really stressed and the releif i feel now is amazing.
Glad she got them all out!
Think an egg that was retained for that long would still be good? Or not enough oxygen? Also, she just laid the last one and neither of them got rolled over by her, i was watching closely - and both the red blob embryo and veins were on the bottom - seemingly already attached
Incubate until there’s no debate, you’ll know soon enough. It’s possible they’ll make it, but also possible they fail. Won’t know unless you try.
Thanks, it (the 1st one to come out) had poo on it and the snake poo smell from it is LOUD. Im thinking bacteria so i want to clean it. Ive got cleaning vinegar, F10 diluted to 1:250 for general cleaning and chlorhexidine diluted properly for cleaning. Spray on paper towel and wipe egg or avoid those? Whats the best thing to clean a new egg you think?
Honestly I’d just gently wipe with a moist paper towel. Their eggshells are permeable, don’t want to use anything too strong.
Awesome. As usual thanks for the advices. Gonna put these 2 in a seperate container though, just incase bacteria does its thing and multiplies
Sounds like a solid plan. Also contains the stink if they do go bad.
Hiro gave a nice suprise just now. Have a question for you guys though. Ive been away from the house for the last 24 hours and these are too stuck together to seperate so im guessing she laid them a while ago. Ive never not been able to seperate them before (this is also my very 1st cornsnake cluth). Theres 12 total and zero slugs, but 2 of them on the bottom are completely boxed in. I put the whole mass on some hatchrite and in the incubator for now.
Any advice and experience insight guys?
