Speckled Kings in Captivity

I was at an expo this weekend and got a baby speckled king snake (something I had been on the lookout for). Something I have noticed is that the captive bred speckled kings seem to almost have a banded pattern on them and less speckled patterning than their wild counterparts. Would this be gene pool, lighting and environmental factors, or something else?

If I had to guess I would say it’s because it’s a baby. As it ages I would think it would look more and more like the wild counterparts unless they’ve been selectively bred.

I was thinking that too, but some of the adults (while they do end up with more of a freckle pattern) still seem to have some bands.

It’s a gorgeous snake as is. I don’t know if I’d want it to change!
