Anyone notice shed problems with super leopards? I only have one (young adult female) and she had a fairly decent sized spot on her back a little after her neck that had stuck shed. After soaking and careful removal I noticed her scales are messed up there for no reason I’m aware of. I haven’t really noticed her shedding extra often like my super GHI did. But got me wondering if shed problems might be a known side effect of homozygous leopard like it is with homozygous GHI.
Maybe she somehow injured the spot but I don’t see how. Hopefully better after her next shed.
Are you feeding f/t or live?
I know one of my girls has a couple rough scales/scar on her neck there and the breeder said it was from a bite. But I do have another girl with the same mark and hers was from shedding. No leopard in her at all.
Some snakes just shed worse than others I’ve seen. And the neck there is a common rub spot.
I think most super Leos have been missed since they look similar to the het. So it may be hard to track if any other owners are having the same issue.
This would be my most likely suspect, if you feed live even more so.
I’ve seen my fair share of reptiles who have rougher shedding spots where they’ve been previously injured, and this can even be caused from injuries they had years ago.
I don’t have a Super Leo but I do have a heterozygous Leo Fire het Clown that doesn’t have issues at all with sheds.
Yes, only live. I thought too big a spot to be from a bite. Also a little far down to be a rub I thought. Hopefully improves with her next few sheds. Maybe something to watch for though as more super leopards are identified.
Thanks! As more homozygous/super leopards are identified through shed testing will be interesting to see if they consistently look different than heterozygous/regular leopards. Also if mine was just an unrelated fluke or if skin issues are a risk in supers. Probably/hopefully something unrelated in my one and only super leopard.
