Surprise Baby Snake!

Hi guys! I’ve been trying to breed my pair of Dumeril’s Boas for the last three years without much success. (I purchased both as adults in late 2020.) Each year I got nothing more than infertile ova, and I’d honestly given up hope of ever getting any babies and I began to wonder if my male was sterile.

The other night I heard some nasty farting sounds coming from the room I keep them in. I checked cages today expecting to find a mess to clean up, and I found this little guy!

I know you can’t tell the size from these pics, but he’s so cute and tiny! About baby ball python size. He was just sitting by his mom’s water bowl, staring up at me. The rest of the litter was a disaster, unfortunately. Lots of infertile ova and several deformed babies that didn’t survive, but I’m so happy to have him!

Congrats on the little one!
I have no experience with Dumeril’s Boas but the fertility issue could be from either the male or female. If you bought them as adults theres no real way to tell what their life was like before you got your hands on them, the issue could lie with how they were raised and how well their health was looked after… I don’t like making assumptions about it but thats why breeders prefer to raise breeding animals from the start or at least early on to ensure they have the care and necessary diet/schedule they need to produce healthy clutches/litters in the future.
One way to rule out where the issue lies unfortunately is to try breeding different pairings to see who has the issue and retire that one to pet only.

Very true. I have no idea what their temps and humidity were like, but when I went to pick them up I thought the cage the male was in was a little small. It was about 40-gallon sized. I have them both in T10s now.

Honestly, I’m just happy to have them, whether they produce or not. I’m too attached to let my boy go and too busy with my day job to add more big snakes right now.
