terrarium substrate

Is calcium substrate fine for leo’s?

Nope!
The reason is because if they are not properly supplied with vitamin powder and calcium they will start shoveling mouthfuls of it and become impacted. Then it becomes a life threatening situation if the gecko can’t pass the calcium sand.

When using a sand (not calcium sand) I liked to use big flat tiles or rocks like shale or slate with a dusting of the sand between them. That way even if my gecko decided to just be a toddler eating dirt there isn’t a way for them to eat a large amount at once.

I personally like to use dry coco dirt. The fine ground coco block and fiber stuff. They hate the way it tastes so the never eat too much. But be careful it doesn’t get too wet. Otherwise there are some filter or play sand and reptidirt combos that many people use and will be much safer than calcium sand
