Is there anyone breeding Eastern hognose snakes? I can’t find any. I want one to play dead. And I already have a western so I wanted a set.
There are a very few Eastern breeders out there. I cannot recall their names off the top of my head but if you reach out to Zac Loughman he might be able to point you in the right direction. I will also see if I can remember who it was
A few things to be aware of though… They are not cheap and they are generally quite picky eaters so you will probably want to make sure you can secure some alternate feeders
Kevin Fisher works with them. He has some really nice ones. I follow him on IG, not sure if he is on FB or not.
Matthew Dove is probably one of the bigger breeders, his are gorgeous and he seems to have a good system for getting them eating.
I don’t have any suggestions, David, but I want to say thanks for the grin. I love the way you worked your post!
I like Kevin fisher and Matthew dove. They both have good animals.
Hi David,
I can’t sell you one as they are native to my area. But i do find them once in awhile. If I do I will see if you want it then and ship it to you.
Here are some old pictures. It’s so funny when they play dead.
And it’s funny too when they act like a cobra.
Hey thanks for all the responses. Anyone have a website or something for Michael Dove?
Here’s his instagram, https://www.instagram.com/blue_ridge_reptiles/, he’s also fairly active on facebook in the Underrated Colubrids group. I’ve talked to him before because I’ve also been interested in getting into eastern, and he’s a super nice guy
I remember finding one beside a trail in Indiana. It was just walking and might not have noticed it if it hadn’t drawn my eye by flipping over. I had to laugh at the gaping mouth like it was proclaiming, “I’m clearly dead. Nothing to see here.” Took a stick and gently turned it rightside up. It promptly flipped over again. “Hey, leave me alone. I’M DEAD! I TOLD YOU, I’M DEAD!! Now go away.” So I went.
I’ve been trying to find one in the wild (just to appreciate, not to take) for YEARS and they’ve eluded me. I would see constant posts online of people finding them in Houston, but somehow no matter how much time I spent exploring…no hognose to be found. Maybe, hopefully I’ll have better luck in NC
Next, it will become you gotta get the tricolored, and both type of Madagascars lol all the hognoses!!!
I have also always wanted to find one in the wild but have no luck. I found out recently that there is a population of really nice red ones about 15-mins from where I grew up in VA, but I never found a single one in all my herping as a kid in that area. I haven’t found any in NC either but I haven’t been out a whole lot and I leave somewhat near a major metropolitan/suburban sprawl.
Where I used to live in Liberty county GA there were a lot of gorgeous reds and oranges. I must have lost the picture of the bright orange I found one time, but this one was pretty cool too.
Hey @lumpy you convinced the spouse and it’s a GO!!
Thanks @chesterhf I will get the wife to look him up.
