I have glass enclosures and im trying to make sure i keep the temps correct. Ive got the thermostat set at 95 but its staying around 83. Just wondering what the rest of yall set yours at. All input welcome
What are you using for heat and how is the probe set up?
Pads. The prob is in-between the glass and the pad
Do you have the kind with the screen on top? If so, is the screen mostly covered? Also is the humidity in a good range?
What type of reptiles do you keep? What is your ambient room temp?
I’m sorry I can’t be of more help! Hopefully others will have some ideas and suggestions.
Ball Pythons. They are mesh tops and mostly covered. Humity stays between 55-65. Room temp roughly 75
Are they eating and shedding ok?
2 of them are but my little male had some trouble last time. He’s about to shed again and ive been keeping a closer eye on his humidity. I just added 2 yesterday so time will tell with them
For the heat pad and glass, having the probe sandwiched between them is perfect.
Are you reading the temp with a temperature gun? If so, you want to make sure that you’re taking the temp of the glass on the inside, not the bedding on top of it. The glass is the most important because the snakes can burrow down to it and burn if it’s too hot.
That said, sometimes you do need to set the temp a little higher on the thermostat to balance it out. I have one that I need to set to 93 to maintain 88 on the tub bottom. Glass can sometimes disperse the temps a bit too easily so the difference can be surprising. Especially if the room temp is 75.
You will want to monitor your temps every so often as well. I try to temp check a random enclosure each week to make sure they’re running the right temps still and adjust as needed. Sometimes winter can mean I need to pop up a thermostat a bit because the rooms get too cold.
Thank you. I think that was the info i needed!
Fwiw, there’s a big difference in my glass tanks between these readings. Sometimes I’ll do a double take when I check bedding temps, then when I check the actual bottom surface of the enclosure, it’s fine. As long as we provide what they need, the animals go where they need to go.
