I used drylock with a little paint (100% water based acrylic) and was wondering if I need to coat it with a clear sealer or if it’s ok how it is
Hi! I do alot of my own DIY enclosures and backgrounds and have gone both routes with a clear acrylic seal and leaving it with just acrylic paint. I like to use a clear sealer on enclosures with animals that require more humidity, and leave unsealed for my dry animals. I’ve found that the clear sealer takes away some of the natural rock appearance. You can lose some of the smaller details you work in with paint. It does however have the advantage of being easier to clean without having to touch up much, though I haven’t had to do many touch ups with my snakes. Mostly frogs or geckos or extra messy climbers. I do have one particular Beardie that likes to
on every rock I make him so I coated his with epoxy resin. I’m not crazy about how shiny it turned out but it stands up to his shenanigans. Mod podge makes a good matte acrylic sealant I like to use. I personally wouldn’t worry about sealing it with a hognose though.

To add to this – all very good advice! And, also, if you do decide to seal with clear acrylic sealant (I do, for cleaning purposes), you can take the edge off the “shiny” look by using 2-3 coats of sealant, and sprinkling some very fine sand or dust over the very last coat after you apply it. That way the drylok and paint are still sealed safely away, but the top layer of the background still has a bit of texture.
Ugh! Beardie poop is so stinky and disgusting
