So this is my rescue hognose, I thought he was normal and he very well could be because he is my first hognose and I am terrible at looking at morphs, but recently I had the thought of he seems darker than a normal. He has an almost completely black belly with a small white wall on the sides(not really noticeable in this picture) but he still has lots of spots. If anyone thinks there is any morphs please let me know. And he could just be a normal but I don’t know
Is he in shed/blue in this photo?
He is too dark to be normal imo, he may be Sable.
That was my first thought. Either that or…Swiss Chocolate? Is that what the other dark hog morph is called?
Both are fairly pricey morphs, so I’d be a little surprised to see one as a rescue, but stranger things have happened.
He is in shed right now although this picture was from early last week and he tends to run this dark and his previous owner was a friend of a friend who couldn’t care for him anymore so we took him in.
He could be sable or just a dark phenotype normal. I don’t personally see Swiss chocolate. Did your friend have any history on him or who his breeder was? If you are really curious Rare Genetics inc has hognose tests in the works and will hopefully have them available sometime soon.
No history, like we don’t even know how old he is
He’s definitely not Swiss. Arctic can make their bellies pretty black. They themselves usually aren’t dark though. You could try to get more detailed pics. It’s possible he’s a sable, but could just be a normal that’s producing a lot of melanin. We hatched a few normals this year that were almost as dark as our sables. The background color on the sables tends to be more richly brown though.
