Tricolor hognose breeding

Hi, I have a question to anyone who has bred tricolor hogs in the past.

I have a tricolor hognose female that bred perfectly last year (several clutches, with 8-10 fertile eggs each.

This year however she layed one completely unfertilised two months ago and basically started laying another one about a week ago… the big issue now is, that she did not lay all of them at once, but two slugs one day, one good one the next, another day later two more slugs. She still does not seem to have all of them out, but she also does not have any visible big lumps like on pictures of eggbound snakes.

Since she is overall healthy, alert and active, had perfect clutches in the past (same male) etc, I am just confused and slightly worried about the situation.

Has anyone had similar experiences or any idea as to what could be going on?

Thank you in advance!

If you’re at all concerned that she’s egg bound, my first recommendation is to get her to a vet, where they can confirm or dismiss this. If it’s been over a week and not all of the eggs are out, it’s likely she may need some help.

Sometimes it doesn’t look like much but it can be a bunch of small slugs stuck together. Vet visit may be your best bet. Try soaking her in warm water a couple times a day. You can gently palpate her to see if you can move them down but excess pressure will invert the ovaduct and cause it to prolapse if the eggs are stuck to the lining.

Hey, I totally forgot to update, sorry.
So I took her to the vet the next day and turned out, she got all of them out and was just a bit more fat than I expected (but not obese or anything!) since she apparently did not use her chonkyness for creating good eggs :joy: But overall she is healthy and happy. Well in any case, she will not be bred again this year, just to be safe.

Thanks for the kind replies

this is an older post so i apologize, i can’t find much specification on other forums or articles for my question!

What weights are your breeding adults? I’ve had one person tell me 200g minimum for my female tri but I haven’t been able to find any other sources to verify that information or not. And then a lot of the RTB or proven breeders females listed for sale in the past haven’t had weights listed so I feel a bit at a loss.
I’m fine sticking with 200g as a goal I just wish I had more than a single opinion to go off of! Thanks
