I just hatched a hognose baby (my second ever!) with this weird scale mutation. It doesn’t look like a kink to me, and the hognose is very spirited and moves around just fine. Obviously he just hatched and so I haven’t tried feeding him yet but I’m hoping it doesn’t affect his digestive track at all. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Does anyone have any advice?

Never seen anything like it, myself. Not what I’d typically expect of a midline fusion defect. Looks like instead of meeting in the middle, the sides first curled in and fused to themselves. Were there any issues with incubation? Honestly with that positioning, I’d be a bit concerned about potential heart abnormalities or impared function there.

No issues with incubation, it was held constantly at 80F and the egg wasn’t moldy or anything. So far he’s really hissy and active. I hope he doesn’t have any heart defects.

I also would be concerned about heart issues with that location…Definitely not the best spot.
I almost wonder if it was like a mutation trigger to what would have been a collarbone or some sort of like… vestigial shoulder/arm of some kind.

I concur about the concern with heart defect. I’ve seen a handful of individuals where the skin over the heart didn’t close over. I wonder if this one started that way and this odd scale formation was the body’s way of trying to repair the opening.

Hopefully the little guy doesn’t suffer any long-term effects from it. Definitely something to keep a close eye on, maybe even a vet visit to see if they can make sure everything looks okay internally.

I remember seeing a Snake Discovery Hognose hatching video (at the 16:59 minute mark) with something vaguely similar… some of the belly scales growing up the side of the body in an odd manner, but just on one side.
Odd for sure, echoing getting this one to a veterinarian to see what may be going on internally if this one pulls through with a first meal…
I was at lunch with my husband when I read this and he was staring at me wondering what the hell I was giggling at so much
