It was a smaller one (like less than 10 vendors) and i was looking for frozen feeders because i heard they are usually a good price at expos, i didn’t touch any snakes, how likely do you think that i could have got snake mites? I did pick up the frozen feeders and some 3D printed toys for my kid, but do they attach to stuff like that? Thank you a in advance
Unlikely, but to be 100% sure you could do a through cleaning of the 3D printed stuff just in case.
It’s more likely if you held animals or purchased things that are more natural like bedding, rocks or branches
Thank you! Unfortunately my kids already started playing with said toys, but i was just wondering. This was my first expo so i didn’t know what to expect. Good to know its unlikely. I guess my next question would be, with the small chance of mites coming into my “collection”, when would i know? Would it be right away or does it take a few weeks or months?
Usually a few weeks. It’s a process that starts slowly and then has a sudden burst of activity. Sometimes the first time you really notice is when they are trying to soak in a water dish. Or on an albino animal a funny color around the eyes, because mites wedged themselves in there.
If it helps you feel a bit better, I’ve worked with a few really nasty outbreaks when I worked at a big box pet shop. But even when all of my reptiles and I were living in a single bedroom we never had a problem at home.
The important thing is to make sure you are wearing gloves and try not to prolong handling of affected animals. Immediately wash your hands and up to the elbows, even after the gloves. The gloves are just to keep them from immediately finding a way under your fingernails or cuticles where they’re harder to wash off. I used dish soap to make sure to break the water tension and drown them.
I never did the long sleeves protection thing unless it was wearing a disposable medical gown over my usual clothes. But still followed immediately by washing up well. Like a reverse surgical scrub. Lol
I had some mites didnt know where they came in from im assuming from the breeder i didnt notice for about a month my albino (said snake from breeder) like said before had some spots and was soaking himelf in his water bowl they never left that snakes encolsure because again like had been said before i washed after handling and the like i used reptile spray from miracle care from amazon and u could use prevent o mite (think thats the name) but those would just be precautions and i wouldnt use them the same way as for a full fledged outbreak because it is a chemical and if u dont have an issue theres no need
Provent-a-Mite (PAM)
Thank you very much!
