Western hognose legality in Iowa is weird. By weird i mean it seems they are legal in a single county but illegal elsewhere - petco has sold them in store just fine in that one county! Like many states the DNR is also weird about enforcement and the law set to protect wild animals does little to assist the public as they are found in one (very protected) area in the SouthEast of Iowa, ending up with a weird bogarting of the species that hinders community outreach. The species itself is so popular and give great PR to how snakes themselves are fairly harmless and what scariness they try to be is all acting - assisting in teaching kiddos the simple idea of animals just acting all huff and puff for their own safety.
Anyway, the website links to a petition and also allows you to find your local legislature reps to contact - i emailed mine and got a nice message back after my long email explaining the oddity of the snakes legality and am surprised to find how open reps are to the idea and snakes in general!
