I’m new to bp’s and want to know what are some cool morphs. So far I really like the dreamsicle’s, banana’s and super fire/leucistic.
Welcome to the community! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, of course, but I love dark genes such as Stranger, GHI, etc. Also Freeway and Pieds (Banana looks good in Pieds). Do you have a price range?
Not really. Pretty anything 2,750 or below. Otherwise too high of an investment. Which ones age the best or look the best as males? I want a smaller bp.
I just want to make sure because it could go either way…Do you mean investment as in:
-future breeder
Or
-pet
Typically with BPs it tends to be more used towards the breeder side of things.
Regardless, the most important thing is that YOU like the look of it. My first fancy BP was a step towards hatching a Blue Eye Lucy. And it was great to see the first clutch pip those little white noses.
The best thing to do is just open morphmarket and look at the various snakes for sale. But do remember that that’s risky because reptiles are like potato chips. Once you have one…why shouldn’t you get another one (or 5). But if you do want to breed definitely make sure to look up info here on the Morphpedia. There’s also a couple of good threads on issues that certain genes can have here too. Also make sure to have access to a good reptile vet BEFORE you need it.
As far as what I think are cool morphs?
I love some of the BEL complies genes mixed with some of the 8 ball genes. Mojave enchi cinnamon and fire can be simple and pretty.
One of my favorite girls is Lesser and Black Pastel.
I too love the Dreamsicle, especially with Enchi.
If you want a pretty BP for a pet, you can’t go wrong with Banana, BEL or Pied. Banana Pied does look pretty awesome.
Keep in mind that many (most) BP morphs look spectacular as babies, but tend to brown out as adults. And there are some enhancing morphs that do a decent job of lessening the browning out. There are even a few morphs that look better and better as they age.
As previously recommended, poke around MorphMarket looking at pics of different morphs and morph combinations both as babies and adults and see what tickles your fancy.
Never truer words were spoken! I joined here in 2020 I think and at the time I had just a few bps but now I have 19 bps alone, with a total of 27 reptiles.
So BEWARE!
If you’re looking into breeding, I’d say thats actually a very reasonable investment. People make the mistake of buying less expensive snakes in the mindset that their offspring will sell better because they cost less. This is not the case…
If you’re just investing into a pet then the price doesn’t matter here.
Also keep in mind that not all male BPs stay small. I’ve seen quite a few male BPs in person within the last year or so that are 3000g+, one being around 4200g. If you want a guaranteed small snake I’d suggest looking into something else.
(Edit): Some cool morphs I can list are all of the Axanthic lines, especially the VPI Axanthics as they have the strongest black/white contrast, but thats my personal bias because I love the Axanthic morph in many different species of snakes lol.
Thanks! Also, when I say investment, I just don’t want to spend too much on the snake. I think I will both breed and keep as pets. I plan on breeding just a little, because I have no idea what I’m doing. Also, I just don’t have enough space yet. Living in a apartment means having even one snake is really cramped.
BTW, I have already poked around MorphMarket. I saved about…23 snakes! They’re pretty much all bananas and dreamsicle’s. I do have a coralglow and a GHI Candy. (What does GHI mean, I’m a total noob, I know). What does 50 percent het or het pied mean? Also, are confusion’s good investments?
GHI is it’s own gene. It’s an acronym for Gotta Have It.
50% hets are gambles
One parent was say het for albino. The other doesn’t have albino. The gene would theoretically pass to 50% of the offspring, but you can’t tell which ones.
66% hets mean both parents were hets. So the odds in offspring produced would be:
1 albino
2 het albinos
1 no albino
2 out of the three non-albinos would be hets. So 66%
But in actual practices you never know. I bred a lesser to a super mojave. Odds say half would be blue eye Lucy’s. I hatched 4 out of 4. It was pretty wild for me cause it was my first clutch. Hahah
My favorite girl I own is a coral glow Mojave fire. They keep nice muted pastels as adults and don’t get all of the CG speckles.
Also if you click the ‘traits’ at the top of the page, it will list the number of each gene the site recognizes as mutations for sale. But if you see a little black circle with an i next to it, you can click that circle to bring up the morphipedia article for that gene
To help you decide, you need to figure if you like brighter or darker morphs, with less or more pattern, in case of pied with more or less white, since there are genes that will alter that.
I recently saw on IG some beautiful banana pieds from petrogenetics, I checked the price on MM and are around you budget. For dreamsicles, combinations with enchi will tend to have more pattern that the ones without so that could help you narrow your search. I tend to like dreams combos with enchi because you can see more pattern but that’s a personal preference.
Thanks @Armiyana! I felt ridiculous when you explained GHI. I still don’t understand what 50% het means or if a snake is het. Sorry, I know I’m being a bit thick right now.
Edit : Just curious, do you mind posting a image of you’re blue eyed lucy’s? I can’t really find any. Also, I checked out a coral glow Mojave. It looks pretty cool! A bit like a candy in my opinion.
