What could i put in this 40 gallon and comfortably for 1-2 years

If you want it to live for 1-2 years then an invertbrate is the only thing I could think of like a tropical praying mantis! such as a giant Asian mantis! but they do have specific requirements you would have to look into plus a 40 gallon might be too large, you could also get an older crested gecko, those are just some I know that live short lives and can live in arboreal set ups but I would wait for some more responses to be safe Ill tag @cmsreptiles since I believe they own praying mantis and arboreal species of inverts Ect.

This setup is not ideal for Mantids, they need a vertical enclosure.
If you’re interested in inverts, Death Feigning Beetles might work.
I really don’t have a long mental list of anything else that would work unfortunately, brain fog from being sick doesn’t help either lol 
A lot of species I own aside from Crested Geckos can’t really live in 40gal enclosures their whole lives comfortably.

It could work for blue death feigning beetles, but would need a complete rescape to something a bit more arid.
Large stick insects could possibly work in there as well, though I’m not sure if OP is referring to housing a larger species in there temporarily, or just wants something with a short lifespan.

Could possibly do a male african house snake. They’re awesome little dudes with big personalities.

Ok, that makes it easier lol! It really depends on what size tank you are willing to upgrade to in the future. If you can eventually upgrade to a 4x2x2, you could get a baby corn snake and move it to the 4x2x2 once it grows up. For a corn snake, you would have to keep the humidity between 40% and 50%.
There are also some smaller species, like Armiyana mentioned. male House snakes can live in a 40-gallon tank, though a 50-gallon works well if you end up with a larger individual. Most of the time, though, a 40-gallon is perfect for them.
Leopard geckos are another option, but they are desert creatures. A 40-gallon tank is great for them, and they can even live in a forest-themed enclosure as long as the humidity is kept low, the temperatures are correct, and they have the right substrate. I usually use a play sand and soil mix, or coco coir, since leopard geckos like to dig! Those are just a few species that can start out or live in a 40-gallon tank.
Just make sure to do your own research on these species to find what works best for you, and look into their specific humidity levels and care requirements :D!
