What light should I use

I have always wanted to have a western hognose, I finally have the space, time and money to get one but I don’t know what light I can use. I have a 33 gallon tank, (I’m getting a male not a female), but the tank is 36in long by 18in depth, and 12in tall, so I don’t want to burn the poor guy by the light being to close or strong. Anyone have any suggestions on what uvb or heat fixture I need.

You do not need any kind of light, UVB, or other, as hogs spend most of their time burrowed. You do need under tank heating with a hot spot of 90 degrees,

I use several inches of shredded aspen for my boy. He is always buried. If you get a baby, be sure it is eating preferably frozen thawed on a regular basis. It will be a good idea to start a baby out in a small enclosure such as a 5 gallon tank or 6 to 8 quart tub. Baby hogs are kept in small hatchling tubs by their breeders so you want to mimic that size enclosure as much as possible, at least at first. The reason being is that baby hogs may be a challenge at first to maintain eating consistency once they go from breeder to owner.

Other than that hogs are extremely easy to keep. You just don’t see them much during the day because they burrow so much. They also do better with hairless fuzzies and hairless small mice because in the wild they eat mostly frogs and lizards. But my boy eats regular fuzzies. I just thought I would throw that in……
