I’m looking into getting a Frilled Dragon, but I’m struggling with what to feed it. Everywhere I look says live food, which I know is always the best option, but where I live, its very difficult to get live insects. Could I feed with freeze dried insects instead?
The general rule is, if you can’t provide the proper diet, don’t get the animal. You cannot feed any lizard solely on freeze dried. They do not have enough moisture content and can cause impaction. On top of that, they may not even see them as food as they do not move.
Might I ask the general area (state, country, etc) in which you live? Are there no pet stores or online retailers that you could purchase from?
I live in New York, in the middle of nowhere. There aren’t any pet stores near me and it gets so cold in the winter that I don’t think getting them shipped would work
Getting them shipped would certainly be an option the rest of the year. For the winter, you could always try breeding your own. Or find someone willing to ship in an insulated box with a heat pack in the winter.
As Jennifer said, you do have options, even in the middle of nowhere, NY! Some shippers will ship with heat packs, and if you have a post office close enough that you can drive there without much issue, I do believe you can have certain mail held for pickup there.
