Worm bin for frogs?

So I’ve been keeping a worm bin for my pacman frog…

and I’ve noticed there is a difference between what is safe for your frog and what to give your worms, so I thought this might be a good topic to have especially since the top hit on search engines is over 10 years old?

Anyway, I thought I would list what has worked for me and what hasn’t? Maybe others could also chip in?

Not a good idea:

  • Eco Earth peatmoss and coconut soil has killed my worms. The high salt content, lack of nutrients killed them all
  • whole wheat flour gave my worms sickness–avoid carbs.
  • ? on coffee grounds. Said to be toxic to frogs, but good for worms.
  • do not mix food in with the worms. Worm death. Put it on top of the soil or remove it.
  • ? on straight newspaper due to the ink
  • citrus—toxic to worms.
-? on tea leaves (the plant) since they have caffeine.
  • garlic and other allium—toxic to the frog and the worms.
  • do not recycle the soil from your frog tank into the worm bin. This should be a no duh, but might be worth saying. I do use it for my non-terrarium plants though.

Good Idea:

  • vegetables do well
  • brown paper from amazon packaging does well.
  • Reptisoil has worked fabulously.
  • FoxFarm Ocean Forest Potting Soil worked well when I took out the wood bits, though I found the perlite annoying.
  • I got mixed results with the Biodude’s soil alone. (He uses a high amount of balsa wood sawdust in there and I think the worms struggle with it)
  • banana peels worked really well
  • springtails helped quite a bit
  • 50/50 on isopods they didn’t seem to survive in the fridge
  • I put red wigglers in with the nightcrawlers and for some reason this really works well? organic matter is broken down faster.
  • vegetables worked really well
  • I also use worm castings to boost the soil content of the tanks I have because I moved away from cocopeat. The plants exploded. I’m having trouble keeping my pothos down.
  • de-chlorinate the water you add to the bin–I use the Reptisafe or equivalent. I’ve forgotten this before and worm death. Worms are more sensitive than frogs.

I don’t think you can gut load, so I also feed Dubia roaches to the frog which are easier to gut load.

Anyone has anything to input?

This is super helpful and I hope many people find use from this, but I NEED you to know I read ‘wormbin’ as a verb, and thought that you were going out and catching frogs, and it had a specific name like you can ‘noodle’ for catfish :joy: :joy:
