What is a normal amount of yawning for these snakes?
Not exactly sure what the “normal amount” is myself but just a few questions how long have u had the snake and the normal others will ask to that might be able to answer u better whats the setup like temps humidity any changes in environment how often is he doing it and when can u see any mucus or hear wheezing
It’s hard to say, but it’s usually only really an issue if it’s accompanied by other symptoms like wheezing, excessive saliva, mucus, lethargy, and/or anorexia. It’s normal for them to yawn occasionally after they’ve laid in the same position for a while, after a meal, or to take in new scents
Firstly how much are you experiencing?
In addition to the above possible health issues for excessive yawning, physical tramer to the Jaw can cause it too.
I’ve had her for two or three months. I didn’t see wheezing or mucus, but I guess I wouldn’t know how it would look on a snake. I just did a full substrate change and changed out a couple of enrichment items, but left her scent on her hideouts and put those back in. Her humidity is higher because I just changed it.
How would excessive salivia look on a snake? Should her mouth be wet at all? I would assume so but i don’t know
I was sitting next to her enclosure and saw it and then i took her out for some handling time and saw it again. I let her crawl onto my hand for that handling session though. I did a supervised free roam because she seems to enjoy that. I think i might just freak out at whatever she does. Shes a champagne so it might be a quirk but i don’t know lol
I wouldn’t call two yawns excessive. If there’s no visible saliva with her mouth closed, no noises when she breathes, she’s still eating, drinking, and acting normally, it’s probably just normal yawning/jaw realignment
Ok. Thank you! I just freak out with everything. I want to be the best snake owner possible, ya know? She i still eating and acting like her normal self. I do try and switch up the enrichment i wonder if thats too much stress on her or if its an ok amount of stress. Yesterday she finally crawled on my hand to get out of her enclosure so that felt like a win
There shouldn’t be like strings when she opens her mouth, but it’s ofc normal for the mouth to look shiny/wet overall.
Most of us aren’t in our snake room catching them actually yawning often enough to have a gauge of how often they actually do it. I have a 10’ retic cage in my living room though and he yawns often enough it’s never surprising when I catch him doing it.
Could just be scenting the air better to since u switched things up but that doesnt seem like to much
Good for you, and for her, that you want to take great care of her! I’m always charmed when I see mine yawning. It is cool that you want to give her lots of enrichment. That’s a good thing. You’ve had her for a while so you’re getting a feel for her. Since you asked about how much switching up the enrichment is too much, I will say that’s a solid, “It depends.” Some of them do not like changes to their environs. Most seem to benefit from occasional changes. Few appreciate large or frequent changes. I have corns rather than BPs, but they are similar in this, I believe. I like to swap some things around monthly, and fluff the bedding weekly. That’s why they call me The Destroyer of Tunnels. And it gives the snakes something to do without being a big stressor.
TLDR: pay attention to your animal to know when you’re making too many changes. She’ll let you know.
I’m a stay at home parent so i get to see her
She seems to not like up be held but she does enjoy exploring. Ive taken her outside a few times because we have naturally growing grass and she does the parascoping (i know i spelled that wrong)
Cute! I love taking them outside. Love all the clover in your yard, too.
Thank you
