I keep reminding myself how spoiled we are now with these tests. I’ll suffer though the wait rather than spend 3 years growing a girl up to test her with breeding.
Big Update!
I received my test results for the newly completed GCR/MJ Axanthic test from @rgi ! To my shock, it was negative! So to recap: VPI, TSK, Black Axanthic, GCR, and MJ are all negative. All that leaves is Jolliff or a new gene. Jolliff is so rare, I doubt there will ever be a test for that.
I had a nice talk with Shawn at RGI today and we are making sure that all these results are accurate. I have so far produced 4 visuals (2 males and 2 females) one male has been locking with various females this year. I also have many possible hets.
Thanks to everyone who has helped me untie this mystery of the last 2 years!

That’s pretty wild!
Will be interesting to see what happens since as you said, jolliff is pretty uncommon so the odds of surprise hets matching up would be low.
I don’t think I’ve posted any pictures of the mom that gave me the “Surprise Axanthics”. This is her from about 5 years ago. She’s too big for my photo booth now lol.
I know some Axanthics brown out over time and she is about 8-10 years old in this picture, but she doesn’t look Axanthic at all to me, so is it safe to say she is het. and not visual? The thing about her testing negative on the Axanthic tests is that I don’t know for sure. The male was young (about a year old) and definately not a visual. I’ve had 2 clutches from this pairing ('23 and '24) giving me 12 total hatchlings. Het. to het. breeding should on average give me 1/4 or 3 visuals while Vis to Het. would be 6 visuals. I got 4 plus 1 paradox.
What do you guys think? I think it was Het. to Het and I did well on the odds.
This is SO COOL, a possible new line of Axanthics is so cool! Even if it ends up being the rare line that’s still a super cool surprise and you have some gorgeous animals out of it already - can’t wait to see where this goes!
Thanks! I could not be more pleased with my luck on this. Here are the two visuals from the 2024 clutch:
This is the female. She is Enchi Axanthic Het. Pied
This is the male. He is Blackhead Axanthic Het. Pied.
Really hope I get a clutch this year.
Oh that blackhead enchi boy makes me want a ball python, what a clean crisp boy!
Odds can be really skewed. I had a lesser girl throw 4 out of 4 lessers in her first clutch. Her second clutch was 1 out of 6.
I’ve hit 50% odds on a few het to het clutches before too.
Those babies are super cute. I love the contrast on both.
How have the older clutch turned out? I see the bh pied looks to have browned out but I wonder how much of that is because of how pied brightens the colors
The Blackhead Enchi Axanthic Het. Pied girl from the first clutch is getting good size 600ish grams. She is still very dark and has a lot of flaming. The male has locked with mom a few times so I’m hoping for a clutch there. If she is visible and not het, I should get all Axanthic Pied with about half Blackhead. If I get any non-Axanthic it means she is het for sure.
Another update!
I have been working with Shawn @rgi and he suggested that I test all 4 of my visual axanthics to see if they are positive for the known axanthics before submitting (SRP) Axanthic to MorphMarket as a new gene. (Mom already tested negative). They were all 4 negative for VPI, TSK, Black Axanthic, MJ and GCR. This confirms that my mystery axanthics are either the very rare Jolliff or something we haven’t seen before.
How exciting, congrats and can’t wait to see this continue!!
Wow that is so cool! That is really exiting that there is now a SRP Axanthic morph! Do you know when you will make it official?
I submitted all the information to MorphMarket yesterday. I have no idea how long the process takes. Once they create the listing category, I can list animals with the trait for sale.
I reached out to RGI for a verification and once they get back to me, I will tag in the Admin’s who deal with adding new genes. New genetics are only added during update cycles so it can take months sometimes. Often it is a little bit faster though.
I appreciate that! Shawn @rgi is who I’ve been dealing with.
I’m pretty sure I saw your SRP morph profile submission on my MM feed today, but I’m not sure if that is just the application or if it means it was approved
That would just be the application I filled out. They may need more from me as well as confirming with RGI that all the tests were done. I’m confident that it will all get sorted, but I suspect it will take time. I’ve been chasing this down for 2 years and a few more weeks/months is not a big deal.
Nice, okay, I wasn’t sure if it would show up on your feed since you were the applicant and wanted to make sure you knew. So pleased for you!!
I just wanted to give a heads up that Dr. Ben Morrill of RGI has asked me to be a guest on their live show this Thursday (4/3) at 1pm eastern. We’ll be talking about this Axanthic line. I hope to see some of you there!
Oooh I’ll try and tune in from the West coast~
