A new line of Axanthics?

Do you know if it will be recorded? Because I sadly can’t watch it live because it is the wrong time for me…

It will be.

Thanks to Ben, Shawn and Kayla @rgi for having me on their live show! Also, thanks to all of you that watched it!

Just watched the RGI livestream. Great job! We’re all very excited for you.

If I were you, I would name your axanthic pied the “Thunder Pied” as a nod to MJ’s Lightning Pied. Out of respect, I would ask MJ’s permission first. I don’t think it’s too derivative.

Big update!

MorphMarket has updated their listing labels and SRP Axanthic has been added!

I can now start the process of listing my animals that have been waiting for the right tags. Thank you all so much for going with me on this 2 year adventure of identification, and special thanks to @eaglereptiles !

Good evening everybody… I truly am very excited about this new lineage of Axanthic… From all the photos shared by Mike, SRP Axanthic is definitely its own line and along with the potentials it brings to the future of combos…

I was involved in the Boa/Python world back then (1995-2005) when the first ever Snow Boa was produced along with first ever Jolliff Snow, TSK Snow, and VPI Snow… I was right there in the group chat/forum when Ralph Davis announced about the first ever VPI Snow… I also remember the news spreading like a wildfire through the Ball Python community when TSK came out… I also remember plenty about Jolliff Axanthic and Snow… I love Axanthics now as much as I did back then… Heck, I have several VPI hets along with a pair of MJ hets and a Black Axanthic (IMO I don’t think he’s a Black but actually a TSK as he has not darkened that much being almost 2yo)…

Having said all this and that… There’s no way (in my personal opinion) that this SRP Axanthic would be connected to the Jolliff line… All of the SRP Axanthics looks nowhere like a Jolliff Axanthic… There are reasons why not many are working with Jolliff Axanthics and the main reason would be that they were not all that impressive as a baby like a VPI, TSK, and MJ/GCR are… and the adult Jolliffs are far less impressive… Let’s take Jolliff Snows… If you were not told of that baby’s lineage, you would have quickly deducted that they were the pale form of Albino… Everybody back then pretty much were in an agreement where picking up a Jolliff wasn’t worth the time and money… However, all this still mattered to Ralph Davis… Ralph Davis, after producing a Jolliff Snow, theorized that the Jolliff Axanthic was actually a form of a hypoxanthic (reduced yellow) which would explain why the babies would brown out earlier and more along with why Jolliff Snows would have more yellow than VPI or TSK Snows… He also theorized that Jolliff, if combined with VPI, would make Snows more whiter… To my best guess, nobody really focused on trying to make a double homozygous (VPI x Jolliff) because there probably wasn’t a way to tell back then without today’s genetic testing (I know there are no Jolliff test at this time)… I mean, you could tell if the baby was either a Jolliff or a VPI because they are obviously that different but you probably won’t be able to tell the difference between a VPI/Jolliff and a VPI…

After my hiatus ended in the fall of 2023, my first thing to do was to research into Axanthics as I wanted to achieve the Unicorn (to me) on my bucket list and produce Snows and that was where I found out that both MJ and GCR Axanthics were produced by ball pythons that was traced directly to few specific related Piebalds that were produced and sold by Peter Kahl… When I heard that the SRP Axanthic originated with a Piebald female, I was surprised but not that surprised…

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong as 18 years of hiatus, I’m still learning more and more… and very eager to do so…

Congrats to Mike McGoveran and his own line of Axanthic… Like I said, I’m excited about all of the potentials coming with this line and I look forward to the day I begin working with SRP line…

These are the same line. Black Axanthic and TSK have been proven to be the same gene in genetic testing.

Yes, you are correct but there are some theories which makes it a whole different and new topic which should have its own thread so let’s keep this thread about SRP Axanthic…

Then don’t come into a thread, go on about all the different lines and ask to be corrected on it.

LOL you didn’t correct me at anything because I never said or implied that Black Axanthic is/was not TSK… I was agreeing with your comment… If you were smart enough, you would have figured out that what I meant to do was to imply that Black Axanthics are actually TSKs with another gene at play… I was implying that since my Black Axanthic didn’t darken up at all like a Black Axanthic should, It might as well be a Plain TSK…

I simply chimed with information I felt relevant when it comes to the Axanthics and your attitude/tone towards me was not necessary… Not cool at all…

You imply that they are not the same. They are the same according to genetic testing. The same way that MJ and GCR are the same. The difference is a floating trait that has not been nailed down and not the axanthic trait itself. Much like the TSK ‘stormtrooper’ that cannot be reliably recreated.
Or if it is somehow different it’s a lost line like the 3rd line of butter/lesser RGI is trying to nail down and extremely rare.

I don’t know if @t_h_wyman has any insight on that trait if it’s polygenic or not.

Wording it like this is just saying it’s a line bred trait like Orange Ghost in Hypo…which is genetically the same mutation but with polygenic traits to make the yellow and oranges pop

I’m sorry for blunt comment. It can definitely be read more aggressive than intended. When you ask for input and are given input, this response just seemed deflective. I was more bemused honestly.

Otherwise, having this knowledge about axanthic and the lines after 18 years out of the game is commendable. There are so many that just aren’t taking the time to learn the simple things, so being in depth is great.

I think it’s interesting that my original female is Pied, and my original male is het. Pied. As of right now, all the SRP Axanthic visuals, hets, and possible hets are at least het Pied. What people may not be aware of is that the four males I’m using in this breeding project all have Blackhead in them and two of the four also have Enchi.

Blackhead looks incredible with SRP Axanthic in my opinion, and is traveling with it for the most part.

This year I had several locks between my Blackhead Axanthic (SRP) Pied male and an OD DG possible het Pied female. She seems to have ovulated. Getting DG into this project is what I’m most excited about. I’ll of course be holding back all females from that pairing and at least one male.

I am sorry, I do not completely understand which trait you are referring to? The “Stormtrooper”? Or Butter??

As Christina notes, this is not the correct way to look at them. VPI originally identified the “BlkAx” as darker animals in some of their Ax clutches and then proceeded to selectively linebred for that darkness, they are not inherently black anymore than HC Albino or HI OrangeDream. The base mutation is a constant in these examples and it is the selective breeding that maintains the ‘descriptor’ status. However, unlike those latter two, people just made the assumption that BlkAx were inherently different than any of the existing lines and no longer maintained the selective breeding and so a large majority of these animals are “black” in name only

Further, given the very well documented provenance of the line, there is every indication that we should stop referring to them as BlkAx and instead call them exactly what they are - TSK Ax

Sorry! I was referring to the darkening aspect in early black ax line or the tsk stormtrooper.

I know old school butter is it’s own quest right now

Gotcha.

Well I think I covered that first in my above.

Stormtrooper is likely a bit more complicated

I forget if you broke down how many visual females you hatched out? If so, did they follow the same ‘all blackhead’ theme?

The blackhead boys must be aging beautifully

To be clear, the males I’m referring to are just the ones I’m using in the breeding project. They are: Blackhead Enchi Dbl het SRP/Pied, Blackhead SRP Pied, Blackhead Enchi Pied pos het SRP, and Blackhead SRP het Pied.

In answer to your question, only four total SRP Axanthic visuals have even been produced. Two males and two females. Of course I’m not counting the Paradox male from the first clutch as he is likely a het. The visual female from 2023 is Blackhead Enchi SRP het Pied. The visual female from 2024 is Enchi SRP het Pied (no Blackhead)

I expect to produce more visuals this year including some that will be sold.

Just to clarify, the one in the picture above is the one without Blackhead.
