Adjusting can cause that sometimes they need 18 months if coming from cali to mid/north east areas. I think its not as hard of a change when going to cali. Have you tryed moping your floor or leaving 5 gall buck of warm water out. You could use a few 2 gallons insted of 5 gallon. The concept is precipitation. I find that it works better than humidifiers in my experience. I like swamp coolers. Air flow helps as well. My room drops to 0% humidity in winter and only cages/room gets sppikes when I mop floors, mist walls of cage and leave substrate dry.
Whats that a col ?
Coefficient of inbreeding
My holdback VPI Harlequin (I Believe) Jungle Motley girl. I might dub her Harley, not sure yet. She’s got some oranges coming in on her back that are pretty cool. More so by her tail but I think it’s a sign of whats to come as an adult. Very light head and facial marking so far.
Matt that is one beautiful boa. I can see why your keeped her.
I’ve got a male that’s very similar. Just switch the Harley for RC. He’s definitely very pastel in comparison lol! I love how bright her colors are especially in her tail. I’d like to learn more about the Harley gene I haven’t been able to find much about it and I have a female.
Adon87 that is what I call F1, F2, F3 and so on. The F stand for filial. Each number is how many generations have been breed together. I know some breeders go up to F6 and maybe more.
You’re VPI motley is nice. Matt’s VPI motleys would be a nice addition to your. I picked up two of his VPI’S this year and could not be happier.
I have a few motleys too but they are not VPI mine are Kahl albino.
Here are the 2 VPI’S I got from Matt.
Love that last one! I’ve got a small collection of 5 right now and am working on building up projects for a few years in the future. All of my snakes are visual or get VPI so it’s definitely a gene I’ll be working with extensively. I love the combos and it’s great alone as well. My other two visuals are an IMG VPI 66% het anery and a VPI lab male.
She really is spectacular!!!
Wow! The coloring on that boa is unreal, especially on the tail!!!
He’s also a possible Key West and I’ve gone back and forth on whether or not I think he is or isn’t. His color and pattern suggest there may be something else in there besides just VPI and laby but I’ve seen some other full stripe labs as well so I guess only proving him out will tell lol! Here’s one of his baby pics
Well yes i think thats what its why i chose to cross breed it into columbians with hypo … like all inbred things cross breed just like people
What is that tho
My understanding is that if its inbred cross breed it to something thats alredy mixed to save the line from inbred problems
COI is more specific and detailed metric of tracking. You can get as high as 10 or 12 depending on COI with reptiles. You can also get jacked as quickly as 3. What you are talking about is more of a lebeling tool to know what generation you are on that has been inbred/linebred rather then knowing the possible genetic identity of offspring being identical/similar to parents based on COI%. Unless, that is included in your F1 F2 F3 lebeling and tracked when outcrossed/linebred, or when unrelated bloodlines introduced. However, there would still be a coi in relationship to that generation. Knowing the reasoning, how, why, when, the desired outcome, and consequences of inbreeding based off of COI is another level of that same general topic of lineage which that F1, F2, F3 labeling tool falls in.
@gemrep I am by no means an expert or completely understand the minutiae of COI. However, taking the time to research and grasp basic concepts, % outcomes, and reasoning/theory greaty improved my breeding.
Thats a big mistake and why reptiles are becoming more sensitive to inbreeding. Especially, animals with closed import and export laws like Australia. Not so much a problem with boas, but can be with keeping localities pure, or getting more of 1 specific unavailable new morph.
The more removed the relationship the lower the coi. However, the coi will still increase because of the relationship having same/similar gentics. The more you breed closer relationship the higher and quicker that coi goes. The smaller the coi is and unrelated over a period of time the quicker it goes back to 0. What was an issue back in the day was fewer big name breeders supplied majority of all breeders which dictated that bloodline. Not so different today, but that pool has goten bigger and more unrelated blood has been introduced, in adition to more crossing of major breeder lines with smaller breeder lines and then reintroduced to that pool have helped minimize that issue over time.
Hopefully, that helps. Feel free to PM me so we dont blow up the post of cool BOA pics.
@tommccarthy has been doing this for years and will probably agree. Keep it simple and keep things distant cousins or once/twiced removed unless you really have something special. You might want to go parent/grandparent to offspring , sibling to sibling, or uncle/aunt to niece/nephew in that case but quickly outcros after you get some quantity or issues. I would breed new blood or not breed at all with regards to the unwanted traits because it can always be a hiden thing that pops up from time to time or go unnoticed for several years.
Kind of like bug eyes, but thats a whole other topic/debate within our hobby.
Wow I had never seen a boa with colors quite like this. He is so beautiful and his eye is amazing
Beautiful boa, I really love the coloration on that one. It reminds me of one I sold from this litter, that I kind of regret. Older she got the more pastel she appeared. I ended up keeping mine for being more colorful, since she wasn’t as washed out but should have held onto both.
Here is the VPI Motley Harlequin sire, Ink with my HB from him.
Super aberrant pattern on him without any jungle in the mix. I was told Harley can really make some wild pattern in combo with motley and hypo (probably more). There was also super form of harlequin called the Jester boa, somewhat patternless which is pretty cool. Other than that it’s tough to find any concrete info on it. Seems to make color pop/aberrant patterns (kind of like jungle acts) more and give some pastel like appearance, faded head stamp side medallions ect. That’s what I’ve been able to find. I have a nice Ferrari Jungle Harlequin Hypo I plan to pair to something and bring back to my holdback female (to get jungle off both sides) down the road.
I’m a big fan of RC Pastel! Incredible collection.
